About Skoda Cars

Skoda Auto is a 122-year Czech automobile giant that started out as a motorcycle company. They deal in the production and sale of vehicles in automobile classes like SUVs, small family cars, compact executive/ luxury cars, city cars and supermini cars.

In 1895, two bicycle enthusiasts Vaclav Laurin, a mechanic, and Vaclav Klement, a bookseller, began building bicycles using their own design, and named them Slavia to portray their patriotism in the nationalist atmosphere at the dawn of the 20th century. In 1899, the Laurin and Klement Co. (L & K Co.) began manufacturing motorcycles, which were extremely successful and victorious in several racing competitions. In 1905, Laurin & Klement Co. gradually replaced their motorcycles by automobiles as the first decade of the new century passed.

The Voiturette A was the first Laurin and Klement automobile and became a huge success, and later on became Skoda’s archetype. It helped the company in developing a stable position in the developing international automobile market, to expand their reach and begin operations on a worldwide scale. The volume of the production of vehicles cruised and soon exceeded the potential of a private enterprise. Hence, in 1907, Laurin and Klement decided to convert it into a joint-stock company, or “Aktiengesellschaft”. As the World War I was about to break out, Skoda had to take part in the manufacturing for the armed forces.

As the country developed economically, Laurin & Klement wanted to start a joint venture with a strong industrial partner as it would strengthen and modernise their company. At that time, their company, Laurin & Klement Co. was producing a variety of passenger cars, trucks, buses, airplane engines and agricultural machinery. In 1925, Laurin & Klement Co merged with the Pilsen Skoda Co. and the Laurin and Klement trademark ended. Post World War II, Skoda kept performing consistently and became popular in the Western Europe.

After communism fell, the Czech government decided to establish a joint-venture with German automobile giants Volkswagen AG, who, in 1990, took over 30% shares of Skoda. In the next decade, Volkswagen gradually proceeded with taking over the company and within 5 years, it had 70% shares of Skoda.

Currently, the Volkswagen Group owns 100% shares of Skoda Auto along with other major brands like Audi AG (~99.95%), Bentley Motors Ltd. (100%), Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S (100%), Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. (100%) and Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. (100%), to name a few.
