Skoda Fabia OverviewSkoda, the Czech based automaker and a prominent name in luxury marque in Indian auto industry, owes multiple vehicles. Fabia is Skoda's offering in the gold-digging hatchback segment which rakes in a lot of moolah for the automajors in India. The company presented this vehicle firstly in 2007 in the country and since then it has flourishing at a rapid pace. It is being offered in both petrol as well as diesel fuel trims and it the company's cheapest vehicle in India.
Skoda Fabia is being available in as many as 7 variants, out of which 4 are petrol while remaining three being diesel ones. Apart from the regular 1.2L petrol and diesel engines, the company has also provided the heavy and powerful 1.6-litre petrol engine with the top notch variant of the hatchback. Ironically, despite being an advanced, up-market and sophisticated hatchback; it lacks an automatic variant which is available with several of its competitors. Lased with almost every single innovative safety feature, Fabia leaves an immensely tiny space for any kind of error.
Skoda Fabia ExteriorSkoda Fabia flaunts an overall sporty look, especially the front fascia appears quite voluptuous. Chrome finish front grille vertical fins forms the front fascia which is complimented well by the bumper and the lip spoiler. The halogen front headlamps are integrated well adjacent to the bonnet and are a delight with the chrome surround radiator grille. Not to forget, the twin fog lamps which are amalgamated well with the front bumper. Additionally, the body color external mirrors and door handles further enhance its glorified appearance.
As we go on sideways and rear end of the car, the hatchback gets more desirable. The 15" alloy wheels are a eye-candy and seduces an individual almost instantly. Even, the wheel caps have three-dimensional contouring in order to bring out a more rugged appeal. Roof-rails are tail lamps are decent at their place. Skoda has offered Fabia hatchback in 5 dynamic eye-soothing shades - Candy White, Cappuccino Beige, Flash Red, Magic Black, and Brilliant White. The overall exterior appearance is better than its previous edition and the enhanced sportiness would certainly help in snatching more and more attention.
Skoda Fabia InteriorInside the cabin, Skoda Fabia is decent, comfortable and sophisticated. The dual-tone onyx and ivory color interior theme is upbeat and refreshing. Front and rear windows are electrically operated power windows. Both the sunvisor comprise of vanity mirrors which can be bring into use by unfolding the sunvisor. Driver seat's height can be adjusted as per the convenience of the driver, manually. In order to get rid of the eerie summer heat, Fabia comes loaded with a manually operated air conditioner which also features dust and pollen filters. Separate A/C vents are assimilated beneath the front seats for the rear seat occupants.
Skoda has not disappointed the music lovers as it has presented the hatchback with a 2-DIN Beat audio player with large format display, four speakers and auxiliary audio input for portable media players. The company has succeeded pretty well in its quest of providing a spacious cabin as there is adequate legroom, head room and shoulder room for the front as well as the rear seat passengers. Additionally, there is a boot space of 315 litres which can swallow a healthy amount of luggage. Apart from it, there are several useful small places to keep belongings such as illuminated glove box, front and rear cup holders and bottle holders in front doors.
Skoda Fabia Engine & TransmissionSkoda is a renowned name for performance-oriented cars and it already possesses several such vehicles in its ever-shining portfolio. Fabia, being the smallest offering, doesn't implies any small in power and performance. The hatch is being offered with both petrol as well as diesel fuel trim. The base and mid-variants, Active and Ambition, respectively comprise of 1.2L MPI Petrol engine. The engine displaces 1198cc and consists of 3-cylinders. It generates a decent amount of power and torque which are precisely 73.7bhp at 5400rpm and 110Nm at 3750rpm, respectively.
On the other hand, the Czech based auotgiant also offers the top-end variant Elegance of the hatchback with the robust 1.6L petrol engine which also does its duties to company's another sedan and its elder sibling, the Rapid sedan. This hefty mill displaces 1598cc and is a 4-cylinder engine. It belts out a maximum power output of 103.2bhp at 5250rpm and a peak torque performance of 153Nm at 3800rpm. Now, if looked upon the diesel powertrains; the company has gone for its tried and tested 1.2L TDI CR Turbocharged diesel engine. It is a 3-cylinder engine and displaces 1199cc. It develops a decent power of 73.7bhp at 4200rpm and torque of 180Nm at 2000rpm. All the three engines, be the 1.2L Petrol, be the 1.6L Petrol or be the 1.2L diesel, are coupled with a 5-speed manual and fully synchronized transmission system in order to capitalize on fuel efficiency while maintaining an impressive performance while the power is being transmitted via the front wheels.
Skoda Fabia MileageMileage plays a vital role in the success of any car, especially in sub 10-lakhs hatchback segment where it is the foremost priority of the buyer. Skoda Fabia base and mid variants which feature the 1.2L petrol mill deliver a fuel economy of 16.4kmpl while the top-end variant with the heavy 1.6L powertrain returns a mileage of 14.8kmpl. As far as the diesel engine is concerned, all the base, mid and top variants comprising of 1.2L engine, apparently come up with a fuel efficiency of 21.0kmpl. The car may not be as impactful in this aspect as its several other foes but in accordance with the power and performance, it is acceptable.
Skoda Fabia Braking and SafetySkoda Fabia is touted as one of the safest hatchback, owing to the exquisite braking system and premium safety features. The hatchback features a hydraulic dual-diagonal circuit braking system, assisted by vacuum. In this system, front brakes disc brakes with inner cooling and with single/piston floating caliper whereas the rear ones are drum brakes. This primary braking system is supported immensely well by the secondary braking components Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and dual rate brake assist system. On the safety front, Fabia comes loaded with dual front airbags, front and rear fog lamps, anti-glare interior rear view mirror, height-adjustable three-point seatbelts at front, and two three-point outer seatbelts and centre lap belt at rear seats etc.
The hatchback, certainly a safe vehicle, going by the aforementioned features and nonetheless, at the same time, a very secured car. In order to deceive thieves and other robbers, it uses engine immobiliser with floating code system, security code for audio player, child-proof rear door locking, remote control with foldable key, remote central locking and unlocking of doors and boot lid etc. to name a few.
Skoda Fabia Performance and HandlingBeing a small hatchback, it is easy to maneuver in the narrow city roads and congested areas. The steering wheel is a electro mechanic power steering with direct rack and pinion steering column. It is height as well as length adjustable steering wheel which further facilitates the driver in setting it up according to his convenience. Both the petrol mills, the 1.2L MPI and 1.6L MPI, provide Fabia a brisk acceleration and obtain a power packed performance from it.
The hatch crosses the 0-100kmph barrier in 15 seconds with the former, while the later registers a timing of 14 seconds. Skoda Fabia clocks a top speed of 160kmph with both these highly refined petrol engines. The diesel mill is the best among all with accomplishing the 100kmph mark from standstill in 17 seconds along with an thunderous top speed of 185kmph.
What do we think about Skoda Fabia? This hatchback hasn't been Skoda's magnum opus car; despite, everything falling in the right place for it. In fact, the Czech manufacturer has stalled its production in the country due to ever deteriorating sales which couldn't prop up despite constant price cuts. The hatchback could not entice the expected buyers and hence could generate the requisite moolah for the company and thus, such a step was inevitable. But, the company is ready to re-launch it in an all new avatar in 2015 which has been spied several times as a test mule on roads. Lets hope for the best from the newer one and see if it overturns its fortune or the wave remains the same about it!
Skoda Fabia CompetitorsSkoda Fabia, being a hatchback, has several competitors in the Indian auto industry in the form of Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20, Fiat Punto, Volkswagen Polo, and Honda Brio. Amidst all such industry heavyweights, the hatchback just couldn't achieve the desired attention. Moreover, the comparatively expensive price tag also let to the slowdown in sales figures. Although, being powerful, agile and innovative; it just could not rise above its contemporaries and hence was declared a debacle by the company. The after sales network of Skoda and wayward pricing were also prominent factors in the downfall of the vehicle.
