Skoda Kodiaq Overview

Considering the ongoing popularity of SUVs in the Indian market, it isn’t at all a surprise that Skoda has decided to bring in Kodiaq to India. The car is based on the same platform (MQB) as the Tiguan, however it offers seven seats instead of five and is therefore longer. The car has evolved from the Vision S concept which was first showcased in Geneva and the name Kodiaq, literally means the Alaskan bear. The proportions are quite alright, and close to what you would expect from an SUV.

Skoda Kodiaq Exterior

Kodiaq is indeed a smart and handsome looking car. There are cuts, creases and shadow-play of surfaces all around that give the car a lot of personality. There’s a prominent butterfly grille at the front, square wheel arches, wrap-around tail lamps that makes the car look bold and muscular. Despite the length and somewhat less height, it manages to look like a proper SUV.
Range of Skoda Kodiaq colour options include Magic Black, Quartz Grey, Moon White and Lava Blue. And Skoda Kodiaq variants aren’t many but one - Style

Skoda Kodiaq Interior

As you have come to expect from Skoda, the Kodiaq offers well-built interiors. The beige-black combination, with other design-elements works really well and provides a rich feeling. The host of features that you get include – electrically adjustable rear-view mirrors, umbrella holder, cruise control, automatic wipers, tyre-pressure monitoring system, sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats, three-zone climate control, canton sound system and many more.
You get tremendous practicality with the tremendous amount of storage spaces all around the cabin. The cherry on the cake would definitely be the third row of seats that can be put to use, albeit only by children.

Skoda Kodiaq Engine & Transmission

At the moment, Skoda Kodiaq offers only one engine option, a 4-cylinder, 2.0-litre diesel that puts out a healthy 150Ps of power and 340Nm of torque. A 7-speed DSG, which is the only transmission option available, offers a flexible drive that suited for all kinds of speed.
Should you be in the mood for some fun, the capable 4x4 transmission would take you to any place you like.

Skoda Kodiaq Mileage

Skoda Kodiaq isn’t exactly frugal with a claimed mileage figure of 16.25kmpl. You can expect it to drop further by 15-20% in real world conditions. Since it’s a diesel, running costs would be more or less at par or better that other rivals like Ford Endeavor, Toyota Fortuner etc.

Skoda Kodiaq Braking and Safety

There are disc brakes at all four wheels that reduce the car’s braking distance quite significantly. The car comes loaded with safety features, and you get 9 airbags that prevent passengers in an event of collision.
Other safety features include ABS, EBD, ASR, TCS, ESC etc. that further enhance the safety net for the car’s occupants.

Skoda Kodiaq Performance and Handling

The car’s suspension has been tuned to provide good balance between ride and handling. The body-roll is well under control and therefore you get a really sporty ride that isn’t very undulating either.
The steering is nice and light slow city speeds and gains good weight as speed progresses which provide great confidence.

What do we think about Skoda Kodiaq?

We are thoroughly impressed with the car as a package. However, we do feel that offering smaller engines and having petrol on the cards would have definitely widened the car’s appeal. Nevertheless, if premium SUV is what you are looking for, you should definitely check out the Kodiaq.

Skoda Kodiaq Competitors

The Skoda Kodiaq would lock horns with the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Volkswagen Tiguan and other cars in the segment. While Kodiaq does offer three rows of seats which are usable and a 4x4 system which is as capable as the rest, the price isn’t exactly competitive. However, it gets to benefit from the launch which is happening at a later point of time than the rest, which should offer it some advantage simply due to novelty factor which makes the car look more fresh.
