Tata Bolt Overview

In what should be seen as the resurgence of Tata Motors, the GenNext series of models have undergone a complete overhaul in how Tata designs and builds its cars.
Tata Bolt Overview
The Bolt is Tata's contender in the premium hatchback segment, and by the looks of it, Tata has hit the bull's eye. Essentially it is the same design architecture as that of the Zest, the Bolt has a large interior space, the interior quality has improved to a level where it can actually stand at par with its German competitors.Tata Bolt Overview
Bolt features one of the highest spec equipment listings in the segment. The choice of engines is same as that of the ones available in the Zest, and with such refined and capable engines, comfortable quality interiors, Bolt is seriously a good car in the premium hatchback segment

Tata Bolt Exterior

The Bolt strikes out as a well balanced car from the outside, with every curve and angle adding to a big premium looking hatchback.
Tata Bolt Exterior
The segment first blackened out headlights are enormous in size and adds a sporty stance to an otherwise high hatchback. The top end variants in the Bolt come with projector headlamps providing a solid look as well as good visibility at nights. The front bumper gets a trapezoidal grill that makes the car look agile from the front and along with the dark black honeycomb grill the Bolt looks muscular from the front. Tata Bolt Exterior
From the rear, the sporty theme continues where the C-Pillars are blackened giving the car premium air to it. The chrome strip that runs just above the boot mounted number plate adds class while also covering the bulk of the car. The departure from the old long strip taillights from Tata is a welcome addition, the new tail lights look small but gel very well with the overall proportion of the car.

Tata Bolt Interior

The biggest leap from the Tata's of old has been in the interiors where Tata has clearly taken the segment by surprise by providing a decent cabin for the driver and the occupants. The Dials are simple but combined with a dark console, they look elegant and sporty.

The three spoke steering too has a chunky feel to it and it features steering mounted controls on the top variants. The all black look of the dash also adds up to the appeal of the cabin, while the fit and finish is truly world class on the Bolt.Tata Bolt Interior
The differentiating factor on the Bolt is the way you can sync your phone mapping apps with the touch screen display at the centre on the console, it goes a long way in enabling the users to find their way easily through traffic. The seats offer good support and comfort to the passengers, making the car a good travel companion.

Tata Bolt Engine & Transmission

Bolt is available in four trim levels in the market, and with two engine options. The 1.3 litre, 4 cylinder engine produces 75bhp and 190Nm of torque. This engine is refined and the torque pull makes it a fairly good engine to ride.
Tata Bolt Engine & Transmission
Bolt's turbocharged petrol REVOTRON engine is a 1.2 litre 4 Cylinder Engine which produces 90bhp and 140Nm of torque, this engine runs smoothly throughout the rev range and its drivability is top notch. The REVOTRON powered Bolt makes a very strong case for itself in the premium hatchback segment.

Tata Bolt Mileage

Bolt's diesel engine has a ARAI Mileage of 22.95kmpl while the Petrol REVOTRON engine gives out a good 17.57kmpl.

Tata Bolt Braking and Safety

The braking system with front brakes being solid discs and rear being drums are a standard throughout the 8 available trims. The safety features include two front airbags, ABS with EBD, engine
immobilizer, and auto door lock system. The availability of air bags, ABS and other safety features differ as per the trim levels.Tata Bolt Braking and Safety

Tata Bolt Performance and Handling

The REVOTRON petrol takes a small time to spool up the turbo but after the 2000 rpm mark the car pulls forward at a brisk pace and it is easy to propel it beyond 150kmph with ease. The steering has a nice light feel to it, but it provides decent feedback at highway speeds to always let the driver be in total control.
Tata Bolt Performance and Handling
The tried and tested diesel motor on the other hand pulls the hatchback with a strong linear power supply making it a fun to drive car.

What do we think about Tata Bolt?

The Bolt is probably the best car TATA has made till date and its build quality, feature list, touch of the plastics, fit and finish, are all way better than any of the TATA cars from the past. The diesel engine is a tried and tested mill and performs decently here too. The new REVOTRON petrol engine is the best part the Bolt has, it is silky smooth, powerful and a fun to drive engine making the bolt a truly hard car to beat in the segment.
