Tata Motors Limited is an Indian automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Mumbai and is a subsidiary of the Tata Group. Tata enjoys incredible brand value in India and has a superb automobile portfolio. Adding to it is the Tata Grande ? a sturdy Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).
In its earlier avatar, it is known as the Tata Sumo Grande. It underwent several revamps and now, Tata has dropped the Sumo tag to only call it Tata Grande. A huge and high SUV, Grande has a mighty presence on road. Tata has revamped the design and the present avatar comes in flowy body contours and 5 body colours to choose from ? Cstle Grey, Mineral Red, Arctic Silver, Pearl White and Arctic White. It is available in both BS-III as well as BS-IV guises. The seating arrangement can accommodate upto 9 passengers. The frontage is beautifully highlighted by a chrome treated grille that also houses the Tata logo. Radiant headlamps and a large air dam to keep the engine cool add to the visual delight. It comes with multiple storage spaces that are very conveniently placed. The cup holders on the floor console, magazine pockets in door pads, seat pockets and bottle holders come in extremely handy. Tata Grande has a lesser engine capacity and more power yield in comparison to its predecessors. This SUV is designed to make you feel raw power and comes with a 2.2 L DICOR engine, delivering 118.31 bhp of power and 250 Nm of flat torque. A 5.25m turning radius is comparable to that of a small car and makes this SUV, a very easy drive. Its domineering stance, a bold chrome ? treated front grill and side finishers in glossy Grey, chrome inserted rub rails and chrome?treated door handles give a splendid look to the car. The sporty steel wheel rims and the ORVMs with blinkers underscore its aesthetic value. Its stunning new body graphics with rear blackhouse and blacked B and C pillar make it a magnificent sight. The interior is done up in two shades ? Braley Beige and Ebony black and the seating arrangement is highly comfortable. The seat fabric is velvet and all seats are fire?resistant and stain?proof. The driver’s seat is adjustable and the power steering is both tiltable and collapsible. Electrically operated wing mirrors, theatre dimming roof lights, follow?me?home lights and the light intensity adjustable instrument panel are some enticing features of Grande. Adding to the passenger pleasure is the Alpine audio system with 6 speakers and and ipod port. The dual AC, with concealed roof ducts for passengers seated in all rows, is highly effective. The headroom, shoulderroom and legroom is adequate and the Grande has additional accessories options available such as an in?car refrigerator, reverse parking aid, art leather seat covers and more. Tata Grande comes powered with a 2.2 litre Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) engine that, being turbo?charged, runs smoothly. It generates a maximum power output of 118.31 bhp (@ 4000 rpm) and a maximum torque yield of 250 Nm (@ 1500?3000 rpm). The powerful engine is mated to a 5-speed, G-76, 4.1-Synchromesh gearbox with overdrive. Tata Sumo Grande Interior

Matching upto the bold exterior, the interior of Tata Grande is a feature?packed affair. The power steering is responsive and the Heating, Ventilation and AC (HVAC) unit is very effective. Dual integrated roof AC with roof?mounted ducts make it quite a comfortable automobile. The wing mirrors on the outside can be electronically adjusted from within the vehicle and the power windows add to the comfort value. Adding to the aesthetic appeal of the interior is the dual colour tone of Barley Beige and Ebony Black. The seats are fire?resistant and made of soft velvet full fabric and come with back pockets. The frontal seats have 3?position lumbar support and the driver’s seat is multi?stage height adjustable. There’s an arm rest on the driver and co?driver seats and a foldable hand rest on middle row seats. The 3rd row seats are tumbling?type and removable. A side?facing foldable seat is an added charm.
The lighting in the car is impressive and there is a front roof lamp along with a middle row lamp. The doors have puddle lamps and the ignition key slot is illuminated. Moreover, the light intensity on the instrument panel can be adjusted as per choice. The car has ample storage spaces like cup holders on the front console, bottle holders, seat pockets and magazine pockets in the door pads. The gear shifts are smooth and the vehicle is suitable for off?roading as well.

Tata Sumo Grande Mileage

The Tata Grande engine is a 2.2 L Diesel engine with 4 cylinders and 16 valves. The Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) fuel supply system displaces 2179 cc of power. Tata Sumo Grande Performance and Handling

The suspension system of Tata Grande is quite impressive with an independent wishbone type with coil springs for the front axle and a parabolic type with leaf springs for the rear axle. The turning radius of 5.25 m makes Grande very drivable. The ride quality is superior even on harsh road conditions and the same is attributable to a robust chassis, incredible tyres and brilliant engine.

What do we think about Tata Sumo Grande?

The beefed-up Tata Grande is a macho ride with comfortable seating inside. The robust chassis and incredible ground clearance of 180 mm make it a very enticing SUV. The looks are sturdy, simple and the stance, true to its name, is grand. With a stylized chrome grill and radiant headlamps, it makes quite a stunning entry. With a stronger chassis and a perkier engine, it is far superior to its predecessors.
The interiors are bi?tonal with Barley Beige and Ebony black. The seats are comfortable and the inside is pleasant. It comes with a powerful music system, an effective AC, in?cabin illumination and ample storage spaces. Despite that, it loses the battle of aesthetics to its sibling, the Safari. The inferior quality plastic may bother those who are tastefully conscious. Despite that, it loses the battle of aesthetics to its sibling, the Safari. The 235/70 R 16 tubeless tyres and a proficient suspension system make it a comfortable drive. Whilst the linear stability is impressive, it is a lousy performer around bends and bumps. It is ungraspable with superior safety features like Anti?lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake?force Distribution (EBD) and airbags are missing from this SUV. Tata Grande is quite heavy and to manage the momentum, ABS is a necessary feature. Tata is a big brand and therefore, Grande has the advantage of a widespread dealer network and the potential buyers will love that its spare parts are easily available. It was initially called Tata Sumo Grande and later, the Sumo tag was dropped in order to refurnish its brand image. This, however, has been a poor strategy so far. Sumo has an associative value of a semi?commercial vehicle and in spite of the tag being dropped, it never stopped chasing the Grande or penetrating the minds of buyers. The buying behaviour in India operates on the principle of top?of?the?mind recall and the Sumo image made buyers turn their heads away from this Tata automobile. Grande, with its study stance and ample space, should rather have been promoted in the rural areas and could well have been a hit there. For the urbane buyers, the absence of contemporary features can be quite bothersome. The price of this SUV hovers between 7.8 L and 9.1 L and this is quite attractive for an SUV.

Tata Sumo Grande Competitors

Auto?cannibalism (pun intended!) is on naked display as Tata Grande is in direct competition with its sibling, Tata Safari. The far superior interior of Safari leaves the Grande, far behind. Tata Grande is a rehashed Tata Sumo Grande and is far better than all its predecessors. Competitors like Chevrolet Tavera and Toyota Innova are more predominant players and Grande is far behind in the SUV segment. Nearly all of Grande’s competitors come with superior safety features like Anti?lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake?force Distribution (EBD) and airbags but the same are amiss from Grande. The refined 2.2 L DICOR engine scores over that of Renault Duster but falls short against Nissan Terrano’s.
