Quick overview about Tata Sumo Gold

Overview:

One of the first few vehicles to have tapped success in the utility vehicle segment, the Tata Sumo has been around for quite some time. Gone are the rectangular headlamps and in are the new design lights that first made appearance in the Sumo Victa

Exterior:

Although it might have not completely lost its boxy styling, the Sumo looks well proportioned in the current avatar, the Sumo Gold. The styling isn't outright muscular, but thanks to additions like the flared fenders, high ground clearance, and an upright stance, it is presentable

Interior:

It might not be a plush lounge inside, but the Sumo Gold's interiors offer an overall comfortable and airy cabin. There would be no concerns regarding the headroom or passenger space, because there is plenty

Engine & Transmission:

The Sumo Gold is available with two engine options, a BS-IV version and a BS-III variant. There's a small bump in power and torque figures in the BS-IV version

Mileage:

ARAI claimed figure for the average fuel consumption stand at 15.3kmpl for the BS-IV version, and 14.3kmpl for BS-III variant. That, in conjunction with a 65-litre fuel tank should give the vehicle a good overall range

Braking and Safety:

The braking setup on the Sumo Gold includes disc brakes on the front runners and drum brakes on the rear wheels. All doors get side intrusion beam

Performance and Handling:

The Sumo Gold gets bigger wheels, a tough suspension, and a torquey engine. That gives it a good off-road performance, as long as you don't sink the rear wheels into mud

What do we think about:

The Sumo Gold is placed in a market segment that has never seen much of glamour. It's either the MPVs and compact SUVs, midsize sedans or the full blown SUVs that are generally more glorified, and portrayed as the desirable vehicles

Competitors:

The market's preference has shifted to the MPV segment (Mahindra Xylo, Chevrolet Enjoy, Maruti Ertiga) when looking for people movers. The UV segment still has Chevrolet Tavera and Mahindra Bolero as strong competitors
