Tata Zest Overview

Tata Zest comes in both petrol and diesel fuel trims with a total of 9 variants. The variant nomenclature with this sedan is also fresh unlike the several ongoing Tata cars. The four petrol variants are - XE, XM, XMS, and XT, while the five diesel variants are - XE, XM, XMS, XMA, and XT. It comes loaded with as many as 29 best-in-class features and also dimension wise, it is the largest and the most spacious.
Tata Zest Overview
Tata has installed an AMT gearbox with the diesel variant of this sedan which makes it the country's cheapest diesel automatic sedan. It is also the first vehicle to be wheeled out of Tata factory in accordance with company's latest 'DesigNext, DriveNext, ConnectNext' philosophy. The Zest is being assembled locally at the company's Pimpri and Ranjangaon plant in Pune.

Tata Zest Exterior

Tata Zest was designed with inputs from the company's three different design studios - Pune (India), Conventry (UK) and Turin (Italy). Several designing processes were also carried out by the help of Jaguar Land Rover - company's luxury vehicle divison, as more than 6000 engineers and technicians worked relentlessly and rigorously across five countries and eleven centres. All the aforementioned hard work resulted in the birth of a distinct and never-seen-before sedan in the form of Zest. Being based on a thoroughly modified X1 platform, The all-new styling of the Zest is based on its new design direction of 'Confident Dynamism'. As far as the front fascia is concerned, it flaunts the all new company signature grille with the newly introduced 'Humanity Line'. This front grille is complimented immensely well by the dual projector headlamps with chrome accents, which are standard for every variant, except the base XE. Moreover, the top-end trim XT also enjoys LED daytime running lamps. The front bumper boasts triangle shaped twin fog lamps and double slat air dam.
Tata Zest Exterior
Coming to the side profile of the sedan, it has an enlarged C-pillar which makes the roofline a bit sloppy. The Zest has body colored ORVMs with blinkers and turn indicators, body colored door handles, and body colored bumpers as standard across the entire range of variants. The flared wheel arches have been bestowed with 15" alloy wheels which, again, are standard feature and offered with each and every variant. At the rear-end of the car, the Zest is the first car in its segment to flaunt LED tail lamps. The whole tail lamp cluster is quite stylish and feature a wrap around design. The boot-lid gets a lot of chrome treatment, particularly around the horizontally positioned strip, company logo and model badging. Tata Zest is being offered with 6 vibrant colors - Buzz Blue, Venetian Red, Sky Grey, Dune Beige, Platinum Silver and Pristine White. In all, Tata has finally succeeded in carving out a niche sedan that is good looking, stylish and sporty. It won't be an exaggeration to term it 'The Best Tata Car' till date in the exterior designing aspect.

Tata Zest Interior

Just like the exteriors, interiors are also spiced up by adding various class leading elements in the sedan. The Zest sedan has the best inner cabin spaciousness as compared to any other sedan in its segment. There is plenty of legroom due to the enhanced wheelbase, same goes for the immense shoulder room as width is also best-in-class.
Tata Zest Interior
The interiors have been presented in a dual-tone Java Black & Latte color scheme with fully fabric seat upholstery. The dashboard is also quite stylish and premium in accordance with the Tata Motors next-generation 3-spoke tilt adjustable electric power steering wheel. The all new instrument panel displays several types of information on it such as Segmented multi-info display, Gear shift (up/down) and in-gear indicator, Driver seat belt reminder with buzzer, Individual door-open display, Light-off and key-in reminder with buzzer, Distance-to-empty info, Fuel consumption display, Digital fuel gauge etc. to mention a few. The top-end variant XT has an added functionality of Ambient temperature display with it. The sedan, despite being a sub 4-meter product, comes with a massive boot space of 390-litres.Tata Zest Interior
Tata Zest has Air Conditioner with Heater as standard feature across the entire variant lineup. The base variant XE misses out on some of the contemporary features like Rear power windows, Electric adjustment for ORVMs, and Remote central locking. Some of the first-grade comfort features that can be seen inside the cabin are Adjustable rear headrest, Height adjustable driver's seat, Vanity mirror on sun visor of co-driver side, Foldable key etc. to name a few. The top-end XT trim boasts an array of additional features in form of Rear defogger, Fully automatic temperature control (FATC) and Rear parking sensors. Looking upon the infotainment system which turns out to be the biggest USP of the interiors, it is the ConnectNext infotainment system by Harman (of Harman/Kardon fame); though the base variant XE misses out on this. It comes with AM/FM, USB, AUX IN, iPOD connectivity and with 4 speakers and as many tweeters. There is a remote control system for the music system for the convenience of rear seat passengers. Moreover, the functionality of Speed dependent volume control and steering mounted audio and phone controls further facilitates the driver during city driving. In addition, it also supports Bluetooth connectivity which further gives Phonebook access, Call logs (incoming, outgoing, missed), and Audio streaming. The top-end trim XT has additional features like Call reject with SMS feature, Conference call, Incoming SMS notifications and read-outs, SD card reader, Controls of FATC on touchscreen, Reverse park guide display, Picture/image viewer via USB and SD card, and Voice command recognition technology. Did we forgot to mention that the 5-inch touchscreen system with MapmyIndia next gen Navigation System is also being offered with the top-end trim XT.

Tata Zest Engine & Transmission

As known, the Zest is being offered in both petrol and diesel trims. The petrol variants in-house the recently unveiled all new Revotron 1.2T engine. Being an extremely silent engine, it is India's first Turbocharged Multi-point Fuel Injection (MPFi) Petrol engine. This 1193 cc, 4-cylinder, BS IV compliant motor musters out a maximum power output of 88.7 bhp at 5000rpm and a best-in-class peak torque performance of 140Nm at 1750-3500rpm.
Tata Zest Engine & Transmission
The power is transferred to the front wheels of the sedan enroute a 5-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the diesel variants come loaded with company's tried and tested Fiat's 1.3 MJD engine which returns power in two states - 73.9 bhp and 88.7 bhp. The base trim XE carries this engine and it belts out a top power of 73.9 bhp at 4000rpm and a maximum torque of 190Nm at 1750-3000rpm. It is paired to the company's traditional 5-speed manual transmission. The remaining variant lineup of the diesel trim, donning the same 1248 cc, 4-cylinder, BS IV compliant engine, gets a power output of 88.7 bhp at 4000 and torque performance of 200Nm at 1750-3000rpm. All the variants are coupled with the company's conventional 5-speed gearbox, except the XMA as it is mated to the first-in-class F-Tronic technology-enabled, 5-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), with both Automatic and Sequential mode of gear-shifting.

Tata Zest Mileage

Although, Tata is not the best in this aspect with the Zest but still it has tuned its both engines effectively to return a decent fuel economy. The petrol variants deliver a fuel economy of 17.6 kmpl while the diesel variants come up with an impressive 23.0 kmpl. Both the aforementioned mileage figures are ARAI certified and recorded under normal conditions and they may vary. In thick traffic, narrow and congested roads, and overcrowded streets, the mileage might drop down 4-5 kmpl in both the guises.

Tata Zest Braking and Safety

Tata Zest comes equipped with Disc brake as front brake while Drum brake does the duties as the rear brake. This primary braking system responds instantly and to ensure much better braking, the company has also introduced the most advanced, the 9th generation Antilock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) as secondary braking system. Tata has also blessed the Zest with Speed dependent auto door lock system and Front and rear fog lamps. But unfortunately, the XE variants in both the guises miss out on these features. The company in a bid to avoid any mishap and make sure of maximum safety of the occupants, has also incorporated segment-first, the Corner Stability Control feature in the Tata Zest with mid and top trims. There are also dual front airbags and front seat belts with pre-tensioner & load limiter in the top-end trim. However, for the security of the vehicle; the company has come up with Immobiliser with every variant. But, the top-end trim XT also has a Perimetric alarm system that makes loud sound if any attempt of burglary or thievery is made.

Tata Zest Performance and Handling

Tata Zest comprises of a Electric Power Assist Steering (ePAS) with speed sensitivity and 'Active Return' function - a first in the segment. The steering wheel has a diameter of 366mm which makes it the smallest for a Tata Car, except for the Nano. The new generation tilt Tata signature steering wheel, designed with 3 spokes, is quite lighter in weight and it is easy to maneuver the sedan through narrow roads without putting in special efforts. Furthermore, The dual-path suspension, coupled with a zero-pivot sub-frame and Anti-roll bar, ensures a smooth and comfortable ride. The rear suspension is Twist beam with coil spring which compliments the working on first one extremely well. Tata has introduced first-in-segment 'Multi-Drive Mode' technology which displays three driving modes - Sport, Eco and City with the petrol variants. An individual can select any one mode out of the mentioned three, depending upon the road condition and driving skills. Sport is for lightening fast acceleration, while Eco is intended towards obtaining maximum fuel economy, followed by the City which is a perfect amalgamation of performance and economy. On the other hand, Zest diesel AMT variant comes up with twin driving modes - City and Sport. The Zest petrol variants clock a top speed of 154kmph while the diesel variants register a marginally high top speed of 158kmph.

What do we think about Tata Zest?

Zest's claim-to-fame is the inclusion of more than two and half a dozen of best-in-class features; a never-seen-before in any product and they make it a one-of-its-type sedan. Undeniably, it is the best Tata car till date with its elegant exterior appearance and impeccable interior cabin. Both the powertrains are influential and the introduction of AMT gearbox will further double up its sales! Hence, India's most economical diesel automatic sedan is all set for a grand reception in the country and good days have arrived, at least for Tata Motors.

Tata Zest Competitors

Tata Zest is placed in the most sought after C segment of cars which is currently ruled by the Maruti Swift DZire. Zest's other foes, apart from the Maruti beast, are supposed to be the Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent. In this sub 4-meter sedan segment, the competition is just only stiff but it is quite fierce than any other segment. However, with the belligerent pricing and the hoopla of AMT gearbox, Zest may dry up the sales of all its rivals for a certain time. But, as being said, nothing is permanent, so each one can bounce back and grab its market share again!
