What do we think about Toyota Platinum Etios?Toyota Platinum Etios is a compact sedan that packs a punch with its stunning looks and an incredible mileage. Toyota has been renowned in the world for its continuous innovation and impeccable quality standards. In 2010, Toyota entered in the budget segment in India with Platinum Etios. Indian consumers are very sensitive towards price and more so in this segment. The Japanese automaker has entered the segment post a highly intensive market research. Some consumers may feel that the Platinum Etios is not up to the standards in terms of the interiors that they associate with the brand, thus causing some disappointment. The problem of engine vibration associated with a diesel engine has been taken care of by especially focusing on lowering in-cabin noise. Toyota has packed its Platinum Etios with a proper Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) package. The work includes a switch from rubber engine mounted to the more refined, sound-absorbing hydraulic mounts. The silencer has been modified for better NVH and the damper settings have been fine tuned to take some of the noise out of the suspension. This is a perfect example of how the brand continuously innovates and takes care of the lacunae if any. This is what people expect from the brand and more often than not, Toyota does its bit to not let consumers down. Platinum Etios has the most powerful engine in its category which keeps the consumers satisfied; the only suggestion being that Toyota needs to tweak certain issues as per the Indian road conditions. Due to their excellent research before the launch, Toyota has kept the price in the reasonable bracket and this has lured the Indian consumers significantly. Etios has one of the highest mileage numbers in its segment and this is yet another strong point for the sedan. Indian mindset of focusing more on the driving expenditure is taken care of by the high mileage and low maintenance cost of Etios. Overall, it’s a good car to buy with consumers having enough confidence in the brand’s credo of continuous innovation to resolve the usual problems faced by the buyers.
Toyota Platinum Etios CompetitorsIn the entry family car segment, Toyota Platinum Etios competes with Maruti Suzuki DZire, Honda Amaze, Tata Indigo Manza and Mahindra Logan. Toyota entered the budget segment with the entry of Etios and Liva (the hatchback version) in 2010. This segment is very sensitive to price and mileage. Thus for a car to perform well in this segment, it must be able to deliver the best features in the least price along with a great mileage. In terms of space, Indigo Manza steals the show with its large rear leg-room that gives competition to even the D-segment cars. At the cost of around 6 L, the spacious Manza comes with a massive incentive, and the company proudly boosts of rear leg-room that competes with the likes of Mercedes and BMWs. Dimensionally, Manza is 4.41 m long and 1.7 m wide; Etios takes the second spot in terms of its dimensions. Talking of Manza’s petrol engine, it is powered by a 90 bhp engine producing a torque of 116 Nm (@4750 RPM) and is capable of returning 14.5 km to a litre. Maruti Suzuki DZire occupies the lion’s share in this segment and gives a run for money to all the players here. Maruti has the advantage of a great dealer nexus and has always been the winner in the budget car segment, and DZire keeps up this trend for Maruti. To add onto the country wide presence, totally India-made parts add to the cost-efficiency and the maintenance is the lowest in this segment. It has the same K-series engine as found on the Swift and it produces 85 bhp power and yields a torque of 113 Nm (@4500 RPM) and a superb mileage of 17.9 kmpl. Mahindra Logan, post their separation with the Renault group, reduced the price and offered a car that primarily focuses on the utility angle with very bland interiors along with an average-looking exterior. It is a car made for the consumers who believe in the utilitarian angle and use car only for transportation purposes. It’s a car with no attached frills. Logan has a 1.4 L engine and develops power worth 76 bhp and a torque of 110 Nm (@3000 RPM) and returns 13.4 kmpl. Logan has the advantage of low pricing between the range of 4.6-4.9 L. Etios leads the pack with the biggest engine in the category with a 1.5 L engine that generates power of 90 bhp and yield torque of 132 Nm where the others in the segment lag behind. Etios also beats the competition in terms of the boot space with a capacity of 595 litres with Logan as the second best with a capacity of 510 litres. Mileage is a very important factor in this segment, and decides the buying behavior of consumers. Maruti Dzire and Etios win on this parameter. In terms of safety features, all of them fare at par are there aren’t many points of distinction. The newly introduced Honda Amaze, with good interior quality and the trust that the Honda badge boasts of, has started acquiring a respectable share in the segment much too quickly for the liking of other players. Etios also has to compete with the entry variants of Ford Fiesta, Honda City and Hyundai Verna. Thus in order to stay ahead of its competitors, Toyota must work on the aesthetic appeal of its automobiles, both on the exterior and in the interior.
