Stylish and an elegant ride

Overall rating: 4.00 Reviewed By: Neelam Sanyal on 18 october 2015
I bought it because Leonardo DiCaprio used it and he is my hero! On a serious note, it is a great car with a lot of functionality. The seats are very comfortable and the battery gives a good range. I did not like the design of the car. The aesthetics could have been better and smarter.  Read More »

Prius is a battery powered vehicle which is why I wanted to buy it. It has all the features one wants in a sedan and what's more, it doesn't emit noxious fumes in the atmosphere. What's more, when the juice runs out, you can switch to gasoline and car is good to hit the road again.  Read More »

  • Overview Toyota Prius Overview

It would be odd to not mention Toyota Prius when talking about hybrids. It almost epitomises the genre of vehicles, and since the market isn't as crowded, the Prius is the only option for those wanting a carbon with low carbon footprint.
    Toyota Prius Overview
It might not be everyone's favourite, but there are no alternatives either! There are frugal cars that run on conventional fuels, and there are fully electric vehicles, but hybrids aren't aplenty and that's where Prius comes in.
    Toyota Prius Overview
Currently running in its third generation, the hybrid vehicle can deliver about 20kmpl of fuel, a figure that might not look massive, but one must also consider that this is not just a frugal vehicle. The major objective behind the car is to keep the emissions low, and that's something the Prius does well.
  • Exterior Toyota Prius Exterior

It's a mix of slightly futuristic styling mated to simple looks. The end result isn't a looker, but thanks to the exclusivity, heads still turn wherever the vehicle goes. The front is the sharpest of the profiles on the car. The Projector headlamps and a unique design grille are exclusive to the Prius, and help it stand out.
    Toyota Prius Exterior
Coming towards the sides, and the Prius presents a slightly odd design. It impresses with the use of the prominent shoulder line on the sides though, thus giving the side profile a lot of character. The shape is a bit awkward, but the sloping roofline and the angular rear section make up for it.
    Toyota Prius Exterior
The rear looks just about okay, to be honest, but it's interesting though. The way the rear screen joins the tailgate looks good. The lights, on the other hand, look just about okay, and the same can be said about the chunky bumper. It remains to stand out, especially with things like the illuminating Toyota logo on the front, the Prius doesn't get mistaken for anything else.
  • Interior Toyota Prius Interior

While the car isn't what you would call new, but still the dashboard design design looks from another era, if not outrightly futuristic. The large centrally mounted display shows a lot of essential information, but frees up the space behind the steering wheel.
    Toyota Prius Interior
Two tone theme, dual-glove box, and the full of buttons central console complete the Prius' dash layout. It's plasticky and doesn't exude the premium feel that you would expect. Thankfully, there's a good amount of space inside. The seats are supportive, and that in conjunction with the comfortable ride, makes the Prius a good vehicle to travel in.
    Toyota Prius Interior
The spaciousness is visible in the boot too, but while the wheel wells and the underlying battery take up a lot of space.
  • Engine & Transmission Toyota Prius Engine & Transmission

The Toyota Prius is a hybrid, and a successful at that. It draws its power from a 1.8-litre petrol engine that along with the 60kW motor produce about 134BHP and 142Nm of torque. The front wheel drive vehicle sends power to the front runners via a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
    Toyota Prius Engine & Transmission
The Hybrid Synergy Drive has a couple of power modes, which alter the power delivery and engine usage, according to the user's needs. EV, ECO and PWR modes offer electric only, mix of electric and engine, and powerful delivery from both sources respectively. Also, the KERS (Kinetic Energy Regeneration System) uses the energy that would have otherwise gone waste by charging the onboard battery with it.
  • Mileage Toyota Prius Mileage

Toyota claims that the vehicle can return about 25kmpl, which is a respectable figure. The use of two power sources help the car achieve these levels of efficiency. The low Coefficient of Drag (Cd = 0.25) means the wind resistance on the vehicle is low, which further aids the efficiency.
  • Braking and Safety Toyota Prius Braking and Safety

With discs on all four wheels, the Prius offers effective braking. It comes with its own set of active safety features like ABS, EBD, Traction Control etc. On the safety front, the Prius offers a tested Crash safety body, active headrests, and a set of airbags.
  • Performance and Handling Toyota Prius Performance and Handling

It's not a performance oriented offering, but the 1.8-litre petrol engine along with the electric motor make the Prius quite drivable. The almost 1.5-tonne vehicle is adequately powerful to carry the weight, and thanks to the different driving modes, efficient use of power could be made.

It is softly sprung which makes it unsuitable for cornering and enthusiastic driving, but the same thing rewards in terms of a comfortable ride. It's understood that the sole purpose of a car like Prius is providing a greener means of transport.
  • What we think What do we think about Toyota Prius?

Prius, a very interesting vehicle, is certainly the future of automobiles, until we go totally electric or come up with a different fuel. But at a price tag of more than Rs 30 lakh, it doesn't make much sense in a growing market. Local production and competition will certainly help the vehicle and the market segment grow.
  • Competitors Toyota Prius Competitors

Toyota enjoys its monopoly here. The Prius is one of its kind and that helps it enjoy its presence in the market.
