Volkswagen Cross Polo Overview

There used to be a time when the car segments based on body types were limited to only a handful of designs. Be it sedan, hatchback or SUVs. But the time is changing rapidly and increasing competition has pushed manufacturers to come up with new shapes and sizes of the vehicles. And hence came into existence the crossovers. Crossovers are essentially body types which are made by the hybrid of two genres. CrossPolo falls under the category of a crossover, made from mixing hatchback and a compact SUV.
Based on the Volkswagen Polo, the crossover is essentially a Polo at heart with minor changes. Volkswagen CrossPolo is being joined by recently launched Fiat Avventura and soon to be launched Hyundai I20 Cross. This new segment is for those who don't want to miss on essential fun SUV's provide, but can't go for bigger dimensions and inflated budget. The best of both the worlds, Crossovers are the cars of tomorrow.

Volkswagen Cross Polo Exterior

One look on Polo and you will be astonished to see the simplistic yet eye-catching design. The CrossPolo takes forward the same philosophy of Volkswagen. CrossPolo, as mentioned before, is essentially a Polo with minor changes. The visual difference and the most prominent of them all is the matt black plastic cladding at the bottom of the car. This look is adopted by every hatchback crossover in the country.
The matt black plastic cladding not only make the car looks longer than usual, it also gives impact that the ground clearance is high. The bumper is more trapezoidal now on the lower half and lends a more aggressive look to it than the regular Polo. At the rear, the differences are much the same as in the front: matt black lower half of the bumper, and silver bash plate at the bottom. The badging CrossPolo, on the rear door is attractive and mirrors are optionally painted silver.

Volkswagen Cross Polo Interior

Like we have discussed many times before, CrossPolo is nothing but Polo at the heart. And nothing proves it better than the interiors itself. While the exteriors are somewhat different and visible, there is nothing to differentiate the Cross Polo from the regular Polo on the inside. CrossPolo is available only in two variants, and both are the top-spec variant. And hence the equipment level is exhaustive.
The CrossPolo gets climate control, steering-mounted audio controls, a multi-function trip meter in the instrument cluster, and a fair amount of space for the occupants, but not the best in class. The material and trim quality is top-notch and typical Volkswagen. The interiors are black in color, which may help it look sophisticated, but beige color helps in enhancing the roominess. The audio system is one of the best factory-fitted ones in the segment at the moment, and it has all the possible options necessary to keep the occupants entertained.

Volkswagen Cross Polo Engine & Transmission

The CrossPolo is only available in two trims, the 1.5 TDI diesel engine, which was the first one to be launched in India and the 1.2 MPI, the recently launched petrol unit. Both the units are borrowed from the Polo only. The diesel unit is a 1.2-litre TDI mill having three cylinders and develops 74bhp and 180Nm. On the other hand, the 1.2 MPI unit is capable of producing 75 bhp of power and 110 Nm of torque. Both the units come mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox sending power to the front wheels.
Competitors Crossover segment is a new segment altogether and hence the competitors are limited for CrossPolo. Only Fiat Avventura is a direct rival to Volkswagen CrossPolo and in coming days Hyundai i20 cross will challenge the car. Though CrossPolo can get stiff competition from Hyundai Elite i20 and its Volkswagen Polo, itself. A proper compact SUV challenger could be Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano.

Volkswagen Cross Polo Mileage

Since CrossPolo is essentially a Polo at heart, the mileage figures are almost similar. While the Polo diesel delivers 22.04kmpl, according to ARAI, CrossPolo claims a marginal better fuel efficiency of 22.07kmpl, 0.03kpl better than the regular Polo’s figure.
On the other hand, the petrol unit delivers a 16.47 kmpl efficiency according to ARAI.

What do we think about Volkswagen Cross Polo?

The only and the biggest downside for the Volkswagen CrossPolo is that it is almost Rs 2 lakh expensive than the base Polo. The CrossPolo comes in two variants namely, CrossPolo 1.2 MPI retailing at about Rs 6.94 lakh and CrossPolo 1.5 TDI, retailing for about Rs 7.90 lakh. If you compare it with the normal Polo hatchback, that is a huge amount difference between the two. The Polo petrol starts at about Rs 4.99 lakhs and goes upto Rs 8 lakh for the GT TDi model. For that price, one can have a top-end diesel Hyundai i20, which manages to outdo the Cross Polo on many of the specifications as well as features fronts.
On the other hand, the rival of CrossPolo, Fiat Avventura comes with way more options. Avventura starts at about Rs 5.99 lakh for the base petrol, which is almost a lakh cheaper and has five variants, with the top-of-the-line costing about Rs 8.17 lakh. The only difference between the two is the brand and one has to decide, whether to shell out that much premium for the VW brand.
