Volkswagen Tiguan PreviewThe Indian market’s affinity towards all thing SUVs is beyond reproach. The many automakers running their respective businesses in India know this quite well. In the past few years, no other segment has shown such impressive growth as the SUV segment. It is no surprise then, that many automakers prepare to roll out their own version of the compact crossover for the Indian market. Volkswagen is one such automaker that is closely eying to make its foray in the lucrative compact SUV segment, after successfully establishing base in the hatchback, sedan and the premium SUV segment. For the job, Volkswagen is betting high and hard on its Taigun Concept that was presented for the first time at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show.
Volkswagen Tiguan Platform
The Volkswagen Tiguan is based on the company’s new ’New Small Family Platform’ that also underpins the new Volkswagen Up! that is expected to arrive in India in 2014. The Concept measures 3,859mm long, 1,728mm wide and the 1,570mm tall. Its sub 4-metre length makes the Taigun eligible for the excise duty reduction benefit. The wheelbase of the car measures 2,470mm, which is large given the overall length of the car. The resulting effect? Short overhangs and aggressive and appealing stance of the car.
Volkswagen Tiguan Interior
On the inside, the Tiguan has been equipped with simple and smart dashboard that features three dials for the infotainment system. There is also a touch screen interface, which supports functions such as Bluetooth, audio system and the satellite navigation system.
Volkswagen Tiguan Engine Specifications
Under the hood of the Concept car, is a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine that is rated at 110PS of max power and 175Nm of peak torque at 1,500rpm. The said engine range has been extended to that of a three-cylinder petrol unit as well, by adding fuel injection and turbocharging technology. The 0 to 100 kmph is reached in 9.2 seconds with a top speed of 186 kmph. Volkswagen claims a fuel economy of around 22 kmpl.
The Volkswagen Tiguan will be positioned above the Up! hatchback in the Indian market and will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport, Nissan Terrano and the Renault Duster SUV.
