Volvo S80 Overview

Some people choose ‘different’ and this one word is enough to say. These are the people who love to be driven in an executive saloon but at the same time don’t want to opt for boring German brands. So they opt for mid-sized executive sedan like Volvo S80. With cutting edge technology and advance engineering in its cars, the Swedish automaker has carved its own niche in the market.
The Volvo S80 is one of those distinguished vehicles in vogue today. The elite saloon has got highest level of luxury, dominant engine and the astonishing design elements made for people who have conflicting approach towards German marquees. And in the class where rear-drive sedans are priorities, Volvo continues to flaunt the merits of front-wheel drive. Currently it competes with Audi A6, BMW 5-series and Mercedes Benz E Class saloons.

Volvo S80 Exterior

The appearance of Volvo S80 is of a large saloon but its dimensions are that of a mid-sized sedan. The car remains a handsome till date with the waterfall design on the bonnet and the boot- lid which helps it conceal the bulky nature at the front and the rear. The car is surprisingly a sleek sedan that moved away from the conventional boxy design.
If you are a serious buyer than don’t expect from it heaps of chrome and massive grille framework or sporty 20-inch alloy wheels. The exterior design is unperturbed from all these demeanors. The cars comes with sparkling set of headlights while the rear cluster boasts of reverse light, parking lights, brake light and turn indicators. If you are the one looking for a saloon that talks about its business without shouting, then Volvo S80 is made for you.

Volvo S80 Interior

Volvo S80 is an excellent choice for covering long distances comfortably on rear seats alongside also appeals to the owners who drive themselves and love to spend their time on freeways. It comes with all usual opulent amenities expected in this class of sedan.
The cabin seems to be five-star suite with leather upholstery and wooden styling along with a bit of cross brushed aluminum, all which cast a bright otherworldly feel. The controls are easy on hands while the driving position is excellent with highly adjustable steering wheel. The seating arrangement is made for warding off long distance aches. The car is fitted with company’s Sensus infotainment system that comes with 7-inch screen which can also serve the purpose of music, navigation system and information about the reversing camera, phone and DVD player, etc.

Volvo S80 Engine & Transmission

The car is available in two diesel variants in the Indian market. The base 2.0L 5-cylinder D4 diesel engine is a twin-turbo charging unit that comes with a displacement capacity of 1984cc. The engine is designed with Dual Over-Head Camshaft (DOHC) that enables the motor to generate a raw power of 163 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque.
The second and the top end variant come equipped with 2.4L in-line D5 diesel engine that has a total displacement capacity of 2400cc. The diesel engine incorporates the same twin-turbo technology but configured on DOHC. The engine produces commanding maximum power of 215 bhp together with 440 Nm of high-end torque throughout. Both the engines are paired with 6-speed automatic transmission system that smartly distributes power to the front wheel. The D5 engine variant is a respectable performer and is the big seller across most of the Volvo’s models.

Volvo S80 Mileage

The base variant of Volvo S80 sedan comes equipped with a D4 diesel engine that gives standard mileage of 10.1 kmpl in urban conditions and 16 kmpl on highways.
The diesel D5 engine tops the list in terms of fuel efficiency. It delivers 10 kmpl in city conditions while on the longer routes it can push the figure up to 16 kmpl. So for the criss-crossers, both the diesel variants could serve the purpose for voyaging.

Volvo S80 Braking and Safety

Volvo S80 comes with advance ventilated disc brakes at both the sides. The braking technologies include Adaptive brake lights which activates above 50 kmph, Ready Alert brakes which ensures short braking and controls braking power in case of sudden release of accelerator and the Hydraulic Brake Assist which maintains pressure and enable the driver to stop the vehicle at shortest distance. The car also sport some of the finest shock absorbers in the form of McPherson spring struts along with anti-lift, anti-dive and anti-roll bar functions while the rear axle contains multi-link suspension system.
When it comes to safety, Volvo cars as usual steal the show. S80 is loaded with 2 step airbags at the driver and co-passenger side, Whiplash Protection System for the front seats, head restraints for all seats, IDIS system which avoids distractions in critical situations, level sensor for security and Personal Car Communicator besides tons of other safety features.

Volvo S80 Performance and Handling

The varieties of diesel variants perform remarkably well which are best suited for traveling around. The 2.0L engine variant rushes to 100 kmph from standstill in 6.5 seconds of time reaching the top speed of 250 kmph. While the powerful D5 turbocharged engine sprints from 0-100 kmph in 8.5 seconds of time gaining the top speed of 230 kmph. Hence acceleration and pickup is marvelous in all the variants.
The chassis of S80 saloon leaves you cold and its role in the car comes surprising. The motorway ride is outstanding where stability and Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) levels are beyond question. The body movements in the car are firmly controlled while it is suppler with sturdy grip on road. But even though it doesn’t tops the twisty roads but is endearing for highway cruising.

What do we think about Volvo S80?

There are plenty of premium brands that feel more upscale than the Volvo S80. There are many cars that exceed its balance and grip on road, yet, this stealth saloon is undoubtedly one of the safest cars your money can buy. For elite saloon buyers who want to taste diverge from the mainstream, S80 is the car to consider.
It’s difficult to sum up about the car but it’s a credible alternative to its counterparts. It’s comfortable and modest and holds price tag that undercuts many of the German and Japanese brands. Overall, it is still an alternate choice but has a long way to go before it should be considered as a default choice in the executive class.

Volvo S80 Competitors

The luxurious Volvo S80 is pitted against the German saloons in the segment. When comparing Volvo S80 with Mercedes Benz E-class, BMW 5-series and Audi A6, it’s a nip and tuck affair in terms of interior comfort.
Volvo S80 is an excellent value for money and well laid out inside but the engine is unrefined in comparison to other three, which in turn makes the car feel a bit inferior in terms of driving experience.
