150cc segment on fire, Honda increases power for bikes silently

Snapshot: No changes have been made on the styling part and the engine also remains largely unchanged apart from the increase in the power figures.

Looks like the launch of the new Yamaha FZ V2.0 and Suzuki Gixxer in the 150cc segment have rattled the sleeping giant Honda as they silently increased the power of their bullish products, Honda CBR 150R and Honda CB Trigger by margins to give them a competitive edge over other products. No changes have been made on the styling part and the engine also remains largely unchanged apart from the increase in the power figures.

The CB Trigger will have the same 149.1cc engine that is now tweaked to produce a power figure of 14.5 PS at 8500 RPM which is 0.6 PS more than the existing model and a torque of 12.50 Nm at 6500 RPM which is the same as the existing model mated with a 5 speed gearbox.

The CBR150R will now produce 18.5 PS of power at 10,500 RPM, a whole 0.7 PS more than the existing model. Otherwise the engine will remain the same 149.4cc 4-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder unit producing a peak torque of 12.6 Nm @ 8500 RPM which is the same as the earlier model, mated with a 6-speed gearbox.

Honda has been a market leader in the scooter segment for a long time now, thanks to its hottest selling Activa. But the motorcycling segment has not borne good results for the Honda especially the 150 cc segment despite having two differently placed offerings in it. CBR 150R, although a competent bike, is priced high viz-a-viz to competitors and CB Trigger on the other hand lacks design philosophy and features.

Competing against the likes of the Bajaj Pulsar, Yamaha FZ/Fazer, and Suzuki Gixxer, Honda desperately needed some change in their portfolio. Although, the mere increase in power won't let the customers consider the bike, it is definitely a step forward in the right direction.
