Fiat enthusiasts in India now have a genuine reason to celebrate the Italian brand in the country - For Fiat India has officially confirmed that its performance division, Abarth will be launched in the country soon and the first model to get the Abarth tag would be none other than, Fiat 500.
The Fiat 500 Abarth will be initially brought into the country via the CBU route. However, Fiat India is also mulling to locally assemble the super premium hot hatch at its manufacturing plant at Ranjangaon. "We plan to launch Abarth 500 later this year in India. Initially we would import the car as a completely built unit (CBU) but later on we plan to locally assemble it at our Ranjangaon plant," Fiat Group Automobiles India president and managing director Nagesh Basavanhalli remarked. When launched, the Fiat 500 Abarth will rival the likes of Mini Cooper and the Volkswagen Beetle in the Indian market.
Some of the notable visual appearances, which the Abarth tag will bring to the Fiat 500 are gas discharge headlights, sunroof, cross-drilled brake disc, sports sears, lowered suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, 7 airbags, turbo boost gauge, twin exhaust outlets, ABS with EBD and HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance), parking sensors, audio system, etc.
Under the hood will be a 1.4-litre MultiAir turbocharged petrol engine that is rated at 160PS of max power and 230Nm of peak torque. The performance oriented hot hatch also features a high-flow air filter, TCC (Torque Transfer Control) and the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) that is tuned to extract the maximum power from the engine in Sport mode.
Apart from introducing the Abarth brand in the country, Fiat India will also be launching four new models before the end of 2014. The updated version of its flagship Linea sedan is scheduled to launched next month, while the new version of Punto and the Punto Avventura compact urban crossover will hit the streets in the coming months.
