BMW India is getting ready to roll out the facelifted version of the X5 in the country on the 29th of May 2014. It is understood that the BMW dealers have already started accepted bookings for the 3.0-lire diesel variant of the 2014 X5 with a down payment of Rs 5 lakh. Deliveries are expected to commence from June onwards. The model that is now in its third generation was presented for the first time at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show and later, made its Indian debut at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show alongside, the BMW 3-Series GT and i8 electric supercar.

The BMW X5 - the model that pioneered the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment is said to be one of BMW’s best-selling global cars in its class. The big news about the updated model is that it could be offered in India with a new engine option: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine - a move that we suspect is to match the Mercedes Benz’s offering with the latest M-Class. The 3.0-litre diesel engine that serves the current model will also continue to be available in the Indian market. This unit is rated at 258PS and 560Nm and comes mated to an 8-Speed automatic gearbox.

Visually, the 2014 X5 has received a new bolder front end with a prominent kidney grille, LED headlamps and chrome garnish on the re-designed grille. The tall glass house assembly at the rear remains a key deign feature on the X5, which follows on from the original E53 model that was launched in 1999 and the second generation E70 model of 2008. Overall, the upcoming X5 does look well structured and contoured than its predecessor.

The interiors have been updated as well, to accommodate more comfort and entertainment features. The notable one is the option of two rear seat configurations. Customers will be able to choose from a fixed 40/20/40 split bench arrangement or a newly developed 70/30 split bench that adjusts longitudinally to free up leg space for an optional third row of seats. Boot capacity has also been increased by 30 litres to 650 litres.

The X5 SAV comes with the new BMW xDrive as standard - an intelligent all-wheel drive system that monitors the driving situation constantly and distributed drive power smoothly between the axles. The vehicle has also been equipped with the Dynamic Performance Control feature optimises tracking stability under tough driving situating, especially when accelerating out of a sharp bend.

The 2014 BMW X5 will be locally built at the BMW plant in Chennai and will rival the likes of Mercedes Benz M-Class, Audi Q7 and the Range Rover SUV in the Indian market.
