Volkswagen has unveiled the new Golf R Variant compact sports car with all-wheel-drive at the 2014 LA Motor Show. This station wagon has the capacity to accommodate five individuals with comparable cargo space to compact SUVs. It would be going on sale in the spring of 2015 in Europe with several other international arenas to follow soon after.
This Volkswagen offering shares its engine with the Golf R as it in-houses the same 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine which churns out a maximum power of 296 bhp and peak torque of 380Nm. It is paired with a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission which transmits the power to all the four wheels via the 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system. The chassis features a lowered sport suspension—0.8 inches lower than a stock Golf—the innovative progressive steering system and a stability control system, “ESC Sport”, which can be deactivated for use on a racetrack. Optional highlights include the newest generation of the DCC adaptiv e damping system with a driving profile selector that features a Race mode.
Volkswagen Golf R acclerates to 80kmph from standstill in a mere 3.8 seconds and the 0-100kmph time is around 5.1 seconds. This sports car in a station wagon body is electronically limited to a top track speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The TSI engine being quite powerful is also equally efficient as it has a impressive mileage of 14.45kmpl and CO2 emissions of 163 g/km. The Golf R has cargo capacity comparable to many compact SUVs if the rear seats are folded flat. Inside the cabin, the Golf R Variant is equipped with sport seats with a fabric and Alcantara® material mix. The look is finished off with decorative stitching in crystal gray and an “R” logo on the seat backrest. Other interior features include blue ambient lighting, automatic air conditioning, and the Composition Touch infotainment system.
