2014 Maruti Swift Could be launched by April in India

Snapshot: Maruti could launch the 2014 Swift around April 2014 in India

Maruti has recently created quite a hype in the domestic car market with the launch of Celerio in India. However, one of its most successful entries in the Indian market has been the Swift and a couple of years back Maruti had executed some nice changes. Now, it seems that another refresh is on the cards.

The new 2014 Swift will sport only minor changes with similar powertrain and drivetrain options as present models. The front-end will get the new enlarged fog lamp housings equipped with day time running LEDs to improve safety on roads. Other alterations include the slightly reshaped grille along with a new chin line to the front bumper adding a more pronounced touch to the Swift.

Following the same strategy inside, The interior design also changes slightly, with new design seat fabric featuring black as its keynote colour with lined accents of blue and grey. The Maruti Suzuki Swift will continue to get power from the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel mill under its hood. The petrol engine generates the peak power of 80 BHP while the diesel motor is capable of churning out 75 BHP with impressive torque output of 200 Nm. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual tranmsission. Interestingly, the 1.3-litre DDiS model will now offer even lower CO2 emissions of 101g/km (down from 109g/km) and seven per cent improved combined fuel consumption, which could mean a figure of 24.5 kmpl. A new optional metallic colour, Boost Blue metallic might also be introduced.

The three clearly defined grades continue for the revised model: LXi (Ldi), VXi (Vdi) and ZXi (Zdi). As standard equipment the VXi/Vdi has electric windows, remote central door locking with deadlocks, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors. It could get a MP3 / WMA compatible CD tuner with USB port and steering wheel mounted audio controls. New design 15-inch wheel covers will now be included. ZXi/Zdi adds Bluetooth connectivity, integrated audio unit with music streaming facility and new design 16 inch alloy wheels. The ZXi/Zdi models would also include LED daytime running lights as well as power folding mirrors with integrated turn indicators and ‘auto up’ facility for the driver’s window. Further standard specification for ZXi includes automatic air conditioning, push button keyless start and automatic headlamp control as standard.

Arguably, the Swift has been one of the most successful hatchbacks in India. Initially, when launched in 2005 there were only petrol variants and sales take-offs were sluggish; but with the introduction of diesel powered versions, using FIAT's tried and tested 1.3-litre mill majorly changed buyers perception of diesel cars in the hatchback segment. The company has not revealed any details over its proposed introduction of the 2014 model Swift in India but its likely to reach the Indian roads around the second quarter of this calendar year.
