After the global unveil of the 2014 BMW X5 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and post its recent launch in India, it was only a matter of time before BMW gave the X5’s sibling a similar makeover. The German automaker has revealed the first batch of images of the second generation 2015 BMW X6.
Visually, the X6 Sports Activity Vehicle retains its unique low slung shape and shares most of the design details from the latest X5. It gets the same front fascia as the X5, which includes the two ‘ute’s shared headlights, twin-kidney grille and hood. The new platform that underpins current generation X5 and the X6 makes extensive use of aluminium that has led to a weight reduction of 10kg, despite the additional equipment.
On the inside, the new X6 shares most of the styling and layout from the X5, albeit few minor changes. There is a new wood trim along the dashboard with a new fascia and smart steering wheel. A 10.2-inch infotainment screen controlled by BMW’s iDrive comes as standard and customers can chose from an array of wood and aluminium trim options. The rear bench can be split 40:20:40. Cargo space can now be easily accessed thanks to a new hands-free power tailgate that used sensors to interpret a kicking motion under the rear bumper.
The BMW X6 is currently offered in two variants: the xLine and the M Sport. The former carries a more subdued design, while the latter features BMW’s typical sporty character with massive wheels, large air dams and a bigger body kit. In the international markets, BMW offers the X6 with a choice of 3.0-litre and 4.4.-litre turbo petrol engines, but we reckon BMW India will continue to offer the car with the twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel engine that currently serves the X6 40d. The engine comes mated to an 8-Speed XF automatic transmission that comes with paddle shifters.
The 2015 BMW X6 will be officially presented at the 2014 Moscow Motor Show and is expected to go on sale in the UK around December. Post its international launch, we expect the X6 to arrive on the Indian shores by March 2015.
