Just last week, Volkswagen released the first batch of sketch images teasing the all-new, eight-generation Passat and also released the first technical details of the car. Now however, Volkswagen has officially confirmed that the model will be globally unveiled in an online event on July 3, ahead of its presentation at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October.
Internally codenamed B8, the new Passat has taken a huge leap from its conservative styling to a more sporty and a coupe-like body form. The teaser sketches reveal a low-slung, aerodynamic body and a raked windscreen. The front fascia of the car bears similarities to the Golf and the T-Roc Concept. At the back, features sleek tail lamps and dual exhausts, which have been integrated into the bumper.
The new Passat also brings to the table a whole new range of technologies and features. For instance, due to the use of advanced materials - including, high strength, hot formed steel and aluminium in certain parts - the new Passat is up to 85 kg lighter than the out-going model. This, Volkswagen claims has also improved the fuel efficiency numbers of the new Passat by up to 20 per cent. Dimensionally, the new Passat is marginally smaller that the current model. But even then, the new Passat boasts of improved leg- and head-room, as well as increased boot space.
The mechanical bits too, have been modified to include the new high performance, four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, bi-turbo diesel unit that is rated to deliver 240PS of max power and 500Nm of peak torque. This unit will only be offered with a new 7-Speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid with 50km range on pure electric and a 966km combined cycle range is also being considered.
Post its European debut, the 2015 Volkswagen Passat will go on sale in India as early as December 2014 with an expected sticker price ranging between Rs 22 lakh and Rs 27 lakh.
