It was only last week when we shared an official teaser image of the next generation 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and now we have a trio of fully revealing pics with an undisguised pre-production unit which was likely participating at a commercial shoot. “Bold” is probably the most suitable term to describe the vehicle which adopts a more upscale design compared to the outgoing model and comes with a prominent front grille making extensive use of chrome.
The front fascia is actually inspired by the recently facelifted Mitsubishi Outlander while the rear end hosts a pair of interesting slender taillights derived from those fitted to the 2014 GR-HEV concept. Overall, it doesn’t look as rugged as the outgoing model as it has more rounded surfaces which make it look more modern and sophisticated, but we are certain some of our readers will miss the masculine and imposing styling of the current variant.
Mitsubishi has not released any technical specifications concerning the new Pajero Sport (also known as Challenger in some markets), but it’s safe to say it will be based on the latest generation L200 / Triton pickup truck. Engine availability will greatly depend on the market where the model will be offered and prime candidates will be the familiar 2.4- and 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel units along with a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated gasoline motor.
The India-bound version will likely continue with the 2.5-liter diesel which in the aforementioned L200 / Triton duo is offered in two output configurations: 128 bhp & 240 Nm and a stronger 178 bhp & 400 Nm.
Mitsubishi has promised to stage the world premiere of the 2016 Outlander Sport on August 1 at the Bangkok International Grand Motor Sale in Thailand so chances are sale will commence by the end of the year, with India getting the new version sometime in 2016.
