Ford Motor Company held the world premiere of the EcoSport facelift at the recently concluded 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. Though, it was for the North American markets but it would be developed at the American automaker's Chennai production facility. The India-spec model, expected to be launched by the end of 2017, is expected to be similar in terms of cosmetic updates. However, for the first time, the company showcased an AWD variant of the sub-compact SUV and since then, speculations are rife that it could well head to the Indian shores eventually.
Ford has already confirmed that 2017 EcoSport AWD would go on sale in the US. It has also announced that it would be built in India, while being exported to the States. Now, it triggers the speculation that the company might also launch the 4X4 version in the Indian market to get the advantage of first-in-segment, like Renault did with the Duster AWD in the compact SUV segment. Currently, no sub 4-meter SUV, including the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza and Mahindra TUV300, come with 4WD system, even as an option. Hence, if Ford EcoSport AWD finally arrives in the Indian market, then it would definitely surge the sales charts and further consolidate its position in the Indian market.
Speaking of the US-spec Ford EcoSport facelift, it is offered with a couple of engine and transmission options: a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 6-speed automatic gearbox and the 1.0L 3-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine with front wheel drive system. The India-spec model is expected to retain the ongoing engines in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. The petrol variants would continue carrying the 1.5L 4-cylinder Ti-VCT engine and the 1.0L 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine, while the 1.5L 4-cylinder TDCi diesel motor is also believed to be continued. In all likelihood, the AWD system, if offered, would come with the 1.5L Ti-VCT petrol engine and would have no direct competitor in the country.
