Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch the new-generation Swift hatchback at the 2018 Auto Expo in February. However, while the launch is a good couple of months away, we have come to know that 2018 Maruti Swift would enter production at Suzuki Motor's Gujarat production facility from December 1, 2017. The company would ramp up the production to full capacity from January-February 2018, when the plant reaches a production capacity of 900-1000 units daily. The ongoing model of Swift is developed at the Manesar facility in Haryana.

Being inaugurated this year, the Gujarat manufacturing unit located in Mehsana started operations with the production of 10000 units per month, which roughly equates to 330 units daily from single shift operations. However, the country's largest automaker added the second shift a couple of months back which has increased the production capacity. The facility now has an annual production capacity of 2.50 Lakh units, and hence the company is contemplating shifting the entire Swift production to Gujarat from Manesar. Maruti would accommodate it by shifting the Baleno production to Manesar. The carmaker is expected to give foremost priority to 2018 Swift since it is an all-new model.

The 2018 new-generation Maruti Swift is lighter by 120 kgs than its predecessor due to being based on the Baleno's lightweight 'Heartect' architecture. The reduction in weight would lead to an even greater mileage, somewhere in the vicinity of 26-28kmpl for the diesel variants and 20-23kmpl for the petrol variants. The new hatch would be equipped with dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), seatbelt with pre-tensioners and load limiters, and ISOFIX child seat as standard safety features. The petrol and diesel engines are expected to be carried over from the ongoing model, while speculations are rife that the 1.0L turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine could also make its way in the top-of-the-line variant.
