The German luxury car manufacturing giant Audi, celebrated the 3 millionth sale of its A3 model since its launch in 1996. The A3 which is present in almost 117 countries, was mainly created as a compact car of the premium segment. The 3 millionth car sold was a white 2.0 TDI Quattro Sportback. According to Dr. Frank Dreves, the board of management member for production, the A3 has established a brand segment of its own, the car has been a standard setter in its class, with grade A quality and state of the art technology. 913,000 units of the first generation A3s were sold from 1996-2003. The second generation of the A3 which began production after the fall of the first generation sold almost 2 million cars in the time span of 2003-2013.
The current in-production models of the A3 has very fuel efficient and refined engines, which includes a 1.4 TFSI engine which has CoD (cylinder on demand technology) which has a potential mileage of 21.28 Kmpl and the 1.6 TDI diesel variant. Another engine will be added to the arsenal in 2014, which is a plug-in hybrid with a blend of petrol and electricity.
In the year 2012 alone, the German giant produced a 152,993 units of the A3 in the city of Ingolstadt. The units include different series of the A3 like the general A3, Sportback, the S3 and RS3. The A3 in production today is the third generation of the series, which has been in the market since Febuary 2013. According to the company 700 A3s are being rolled out of the factory each day. The third generation which was unveiled in the fall of 2012 included a sedan and in 2014 Audi is all set to launch a plug-in hybrid called the A3 Sportback e-Tron, which will continue the legacy of the A3.
