Sedan sales declined overall – an expected thing considering the market situation.
Compact sedan sales dipped 41 percent.
New launches and facelifts did comparatively well.
Few models even had growth in sales.
The month of September 2019 wasn’t kind to sales figures. In fact, it has recorded some of the worst sales since the figures were tracked by SIAM in 1997. All segments have been a victim to the slowdown, and the sedan segment has been no different.
The top five sedans sold in September 2019 all showed a decline in sales when compared to September 2018. The smallest decline was by 26 percent, for market leader Maruti Suzuki Dzire, and the biggest decline was also for a Suzuki – the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, at almost 73 percent. A table showing the figures in greater detail is given below.

The Dzire is unsurprisingly the market leader, and it has shown the least decline as well. However, the Ciaz showing such a big decline is a bit of a surprise.
There have been a few bright sparks in the sedan segment, however – the newly-launched Hyundai Elantra went from 91 units on Sept 18 to 94 units this Sept, for a three percent gain.
The newly-launched refreshed Volkswagen Vento also marked up a near-6 percent increase, going from 430 units last Sept to 455 units in the same month this year. Finally, the Skoda Octavia went from 144 units last year to 165 units this year, showing the biggest gain of all, at 14.58 percent.
