Fiat India, having unveiled the high-performance Abarth version of the Punto hatchback last month, is all set to officially launch it next month - October 2015 - in the country. Abarth Punto would be manufactured locally at the company's Rajangaon production facility, while it is expected to have a sticker price of less than Rs. 10 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom). Just so you know, the Italian automaker would also bring the high-performance Abarth badged Avventura crossover in India, albeit next year.
The Abarth Punto would get several cosmetic changes over the regular model. Some of the noticeable changes at the outside are Scorpion-shaped alloy wheels, sporty decals, and Abarth badging. The interior cabin would be almost identical to range-topping variant of standard Punto, save for a couple of changes like red and yellow stitching at the seats and Abarth's Scorpion-shaped badges in place of Fiat emblems. In addition, the ground clearance of Abarth Punto is reduced by 20mm as compared to the regular hatchback. The suspension setup is also tweaked to accommodate the powerful engine, while the front disc brakes and rear drum brakes have also been updated. However, the stance of the hatch isn't as spectacular as one would have imagined.
Under the hood, Abarth Punto would have the 1.4L T-Jet petrol engine, that already powers the Linea sedan. However, there would be a major bump in power output with Abarth Punto as it would develop 145bhp compared to Linea's 114bhp. The engine would deliver a torque of 200Nm, while mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The bookings for the hot hatch have already started at dealerships and one can book it by paying Rs. 20,000. As for safety, dual front airbags and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) are expected to be offered as standard. Abarth Punto, though, doesn't have a direct competitor in the country as of now, but Volkswagen would soon launch the high-performance Polo GTI in the country as it has been snapped a couple of times on the Indian roads.
