All hail the world champion Nico Rosberg! Yes, after much hard work put over the years and being the runner-up for Mercedes, Nico is finally the new world champion of Formula 1. Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit saw a thrilling final 10 lap battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg as the former tried to push the latter behind the Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

But as it happened, Rosberg maintained his calm to finish second, decent enough to get him crowned as the new champion of the world. Nico Rosberg emulated his father Nico’s achievement as he became the 33rd world champion in the 2016 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. His team mate Lewis Hamilton won the race, while their team Mercedes-AMG F1 is already the champion of the constructors.

A gentlemanly gesture by Lewis Hamilton saw him shook hands with the man himself, Nico Rosberg and they hugged on the podium. “Winning the championships is a great feeling", Hamilton said as he congratulated his team mate, “and I’m looking forward to fighting with him for it again next year.” Meanwhile, Rosberg celebrated his win with wife Vivian, father Keke and mother Sina and admitted that it took some time before it really sank in.

As mentioned earlier, in the final moments, Hamilton tried to slow down the race, in hopes to let Vettel and Verstappen catch Rosberg. If by any chance, Rosberg ended up fourth or below, he would have lost the championship title. This led to top four cars finishing the race within two seconds of chequered flag flagging to stop the final race.

While Hamilton ignored instructions from the Mercedes bosses to up his pace, Rosberg kept his cool, though he admitted, it was tough. “That definitely wasn’t the most enjoyable race I’ve ever had!” he admitted. “With Max early on, and then with these guys coming at the end, it definitely wasn’t fun. I’m just really glad it’s over!”

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel finished a third followed by Max Verstappen in his Red Bull. His team mate Daniel Ricciardo followed him to finish a decent fifth, while Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen took a sixth spot. Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg finished seventh ahead of his team mate Sergio Perez. Williams’ Felipe Massa took a ninth spot and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso completed the top ten.

While Hamilton gave us a thrilling race to enjoy, many are criticizing his technique to slow the race and ignoring his bosses. Nevertheless, even after winning the race by 0.4 seconds, he lost a chance to win consecutive world champion title. As for the Rosberg, we are ecstatic to find a new world champion, that too from Germany.

Nico Rosberg is the third world champion from Germany after Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Rosberg has earlier raced with Shumacher for the Mercedes-AMG team for quite some time, before Schumacher called it a quit for the second time.
