Audi, the German powerhouse has unveiled the all new R8 V10 Plus Spyder today. The all-new drophead model is more powerful and more stylish than the outgoing model. The looks have been altered too, along with added features and improved mechanicals. The overall changes to the R8 V10 makes it a more desirable package.
Starting with the exteriors first, the wide and flat Singleframe grille with gloss honeycomb mesh, chrome-plated frame and the Audi Sport emblem are distinctive factor. Optional Audi laser light in the LED headlights, anodised blue dividers as well as the dynamic turn signals are all part of the front look.
The sideblades, sill trim, lid on the convertible top compartment and the fixed rear spoilers are all constructed from carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP). A large, glossy black trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes are made from CFRP too. The soft-top of the R8 is made of fabric, and weighs only 44 kilograms. An electrohydraulic drive can open-close the soft-top in just 20 at speeds up to 50kmph.
This particular R8 V10 as seen in the images comes with an optional micrommata green design package. The distinctive green body shade and Singleframe grille and black tailpipe covers in anthracite grey makes it look stunning. The interiors come in black, Nappa leather with Green contrast stitching on the seats, centre armrests, doors and floor mats.
Inside the cabin is the leather steering wheel with integrated multifunction buttons as well as two large control satellites. It can be used to start and stop the engine and control Audi drive select. Two more buttons including a rotary wheel are used to control the performance mode and the exhaust flaps.
The large 12.3-inch, fully digital Audi virtual cockpit presents all information using 3D graphics. It also serves as a gear shift indicator – when the seven-speed S tronic is being operated in manual mode. Next to it are indicators showing output, torque, g-forces, lap times and the temperatures of the tyres, engine and transmission oil.
Coming to the engine now, the V10 now packs 610 PS of power, a 70PS bump over the ‘standard’ V10 Spyder. This much power is enough to accelerate the R8 V10 Spyder from 0-100 kmph in just 3.3 seconds – 0.3 seconds faster than the previous model. It can also achieve 325 kmph of top speed, an increase of 10 kmph.
But the power surge is not enough for such performance, but the 25 kg reduced weight helps equally to achieve the mentioned result. The torque has been increased too, by 20 Nm to 560 Nm now. This enables the engine to be positioned extremely low, giving the car an extremely low centre of gravity. The engine is mated to a seven-speed S tronic transmission. The power is sent to the quattro drive system in the front axle via a cardan shaft.
Overall, the Audi R8 V10 Spyder is the most powerful, most good looking Audi ever to come out of Inglostadt based manufacturing facility.
