Toyota is working on an all-new Yaris Cross, which is primarily a rugged version of the Yaris hatchback. The new Yaris cross is touted at the emerging markets and will be launched in the overseas markets. In terms of looks, the Yaris Cross features a muscular crossover like styling on the outside. It gets roof rails atop, black cladding on the side and wheel-arch mouldings.

In addition, it sports a brush metal skid plate below the front and rear bumpers. The higher trims in the line-up are likely to feature leather seat upholstery and a host of features including an automatic climate control, an HD instrument cluster, two additional speakers, along with contrasting red stitching on the steering wheel and gear knob for a sportier look. On the safety front, the top-of-the-line trims are likely to get side airbags, curtain airbags and a driver’s side knee airbag.

The new Yaris Cross will derive power from a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, four-cylinder petrol engine with maximum power of 107bhp against 140Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will either include a five-speed manual unit or a CVT automatic gearbox (available only on a single variant). Interestingly, this the same engine that is supposed to power the India-spec Yaris sedan, albeit the transmission choices are likely to vary with a six-speed manual and a seven-step CVT as part of the kit.

While India will get the sedan version of Yaris, which will compete with the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in the segment, there is yet no word if the Yaris hatchback will be launched here. If, at all, it comes to India, the hatchback will rival models including Hyundai i20 Active and the likes.
