Volkswagen India has announced the launch of all-new Passat on October 10, 2017 in the country. Last week, we had informed you that the German automaker has commenced the production of the 2017 Volkswagen Passat at its Aurangabad facility. Having had its world premiere in 2014, it would be the first company product in the Indian market to be based on the MQB platform. Volkswagen had already showcased the plug-in hybrid version of the new saloon at the 2016 Auto Expo, which would take on the likes of Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Skoda Superb.
The 8th-generation Volkswagen Passat has been on test runs on the Indian roads for quite some time. The new saloon, as far as dimensions are concerned, is 2mm shorter in length than the preceding model. Despite reducing the overall length, the wheelbase of the new Passat has witnessed an extension of 79mm, which has subsequently resulted in more legroom for the rear seat occupants. It is around 80 kgs. lighter than the predecessor due to the MQB underpinning. For those asking, Volkswagen Passat was firstly launched in India in 2011 but the company had to pull the plug of the saloon a couple of years later in 2013 due to limited success. The Passat would be Volkswagen's flagship product in the Indian market.
Mechanically, all-new Volkswagen Passat would be powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine which would belt out top power of 174bhp. The engine would be linked to a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. Though, the company hasn't divulged the details of Passat GTE which was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. The plug-in-hybrid variant comes with a 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor with a combined power output of 215bhp and torque performance of 400Nm, mated to a 6-speed DSG automatic gearbox. There is no word on the launch of a petrol or manual variant, as of now. The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is expected to attract a price of Rs. 34 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom).
