Volkswagen India has started the production of all-new Passat at its Aurangabad facility in Maharashtra. It would be the first product from the stable of German automaker in the Indian market underpinning the MQB architecture. The all-new Volkswagen Passat would be launched next month in the country. The saloon was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo in its hyrbid avatar, while it had its world premiere in July 2014. It would challenge the likes of Skoda Superb, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in the Indian market.
Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd. said, “We are happy to bring back one of our most successful premium luxury products to the Indian market, the Volkswagen Passat. With the introduction of the Passat we extend our portfolio, encompassing a wide variety of products from a hatchback to a luxury sedan. The Passat exudes style, timeless design, exemplary performance, and is symbolic of a luxurious lifestyle. We are proud to introduce this car with an iconic heritage to the Indian market.” This is the second outing of Volkswagen Passat in India as it was earlier launched in 2011 but the company was quick to discontinue it in 2013.
Mechanically, the all-new Passat would be powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine with maximum power of 174bhp. The engine would be linked to a 6-speed DSG automatic transmission. The variants and price details haven't been disclosed yet by Volkswagen, but we expect them to be announced shortly as the launch date approaches. The bookings for the saloon are believed to be commencing from the next month. It would be the flagship product of the company in the Indian market, while the prices could start from Rs. 35 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom).
