The iconic Maruti 800 has found its true successor in the car that replaced it in the Indian car market, the Alto 800. It was the big set of shoes to fill for any car and the Alto 800 has just proven its worth to the country’s biggest car maker by becoming Maruti Suzuki’s best selling model of all time in India by making more than 29 lakh customers happy.
Speaking on this achievement, Mr. R S Kalsi, Executive Director (Marketing and Sales) Maruti Suzuki has said - “Over the years, Alto has brought happiness to 29 lakh families to become India’s largest selling single brand car. With its success, Alto continues to remain the first choice for personal mobility solution for Indian customers.”
The Alto was launched in India way back 15 years ago in 2000,and the car took only 15 years to achieve the sales figure of about 29 lakh units, a number which the legendary but now discontinued Maruti 800 took 29 years to get. The Alto was introduced as an 800cc-engine, highly affordable hatchback that was a step above the M800 in terms of exterior, interior and drivability with a 5-speed gearbox. Maruti gave the Alto a bigger 1.0-liter K-series engine in 2010 for customers wanting a bit more powerful engine in a affordable package.
It was only when the original Car of India, the Maruti 800 was discontinued, the Alto 800 came back into existence with the latest models include a new design, improved equipment, a roomier cabin, higher fuel efficiency and the option of an AMT gearbox, making it one of the cheapest cars with an automatic gearbox one can purchase in India.
We congratulate Maruti Suzuki for such an achievement!
