The vehicle was equipped with an e-shifter that didn't deliver the usual response of being shifted into position, leading to numerous drivers exiting the vehicle mistakenly thinking that it was in Park.
Over 41 injuries has been reported due the problem and now possibly Yelchin's death as well. Jennifer Houser from the Los Angeles Police Department told “The victim was on his way to meet his friends for a rehearsal and when he didn't show up, his friends went to his house where they found him deceased by his car. It appears that he momentarily left his car, leaving it in the driveway. In a statement, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US said, “We will open an investigation into the crash that killed Anton Yelchin, Automotive News reported. Yelchin's death occurred when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards into him, pinning him against a brick pillar. FCA issued a safety campaign for 1.1 million vehicles worldwide, including the 2014-2015 Grand Cherokee, because people might exit the models without being in park due to a potentially confusing shifter design. This problem could cause the affected vehicles to roll away. However, officials do not yet know whether this issue has a connection to the actor's death.”
Yelchin roles in Taken, Along Came a Spider, Huff, Hearts in Atlanta, Fright Night, Terminator Salvation, House of D, Alpha Dog, Like Crazy, The Beaver and the rebooted Star Trek franchise, which Yelchin will be seen in again with Star Trek Beyond, out in theatres July 22.
