Italian motor vehicle manufacturer Piaggio is set to step into the 150cc motorcycle segment in India through its subsidiary motorcycle company’s brand name Aprilia. Slated to arrive next year, once the first Aprilia 150cc motorcycle is launched in May 2020, it will be followed with the introduction of three more Aprilia bikes.
With Aprilia, Piaggio aims to penetrate the booming 125cc-150cc motorcycle segment to cater to the respective demand in the Indian market which apparently has a huge buyer and market base. With some Indian and international two-wheeler brands already established in India with their respective 150cc motorcycles, it will be a tough game for Piaggio Aprilia to sink their teeth in the Indian market.
For India, Piaggio Aprilia 150cc motorcycles will be based on the Aprilia RS 150 and the Aprilia Tuono 150 concept models. The street bike will house a bigger capacity motor than the 150cc motor in the Aprilia sports bike. The Aprilia bike’s price in India is expected to start from Rs 80,000 and it will be pitted against ruling motorcycle brands in India like Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company, Yamaha Motor Company and the Austrian brand KTM in the Indian market.
Piaggio strategically aims to cut through the massive 125cc-150cc segment of bikes in India with an aggressive and attractive price range of Rs 80,000 to Rs 1,50,000. Apart from that Piaggio has a market presence beforehand, as it is already offering about ten odd motorbikes in the 800cc-1200cc capacity, which are imported as CB units (Completely Built Units).
