The Piaggio group owned, Aprillia Superbikes will enter the premium class of MotoGP in 2015, a year ahead of its scheduled plan. Aprilia has joined hands with Gresini Racing for a period of four years starting from 2015 until 2018 to manage the racing team. Aprilia already boasts of one of the most successful racing records in 125 and 250 cc category.
The Italian suerbike manufacturer is eyeing its dominance in the premium class segment after tasting success in the lesser capacity segment. 294 wins and 38 championship titles in the Grand Prix motorcycle racing championship (19 Manufacturer and 19 riders), 45 wins and 5 world titles in WSBK (3 manufacturer and 2 riders) and 9 world championships in off road disciplines is the impeccable record of Aprilia.
Many world champions in the motorcycle racing world have been educated or raced on Aprilia. Some of the names include Valentino Rossi (the most successful ride of all time), Max Biaggi, Loris Capirossi, Marco Melandri, Jorge Lorenzo, Casey Stoner and Marc Marquez, who earned his first world title for Derbi 125, also a Piaggio Group brand. Aprilia, Moto Guzzia and Derbi combined gave a stellar record of 102 world titles to the Piaggio Group.
“We decided to make our début a year earlier than planned because Aprilia Racing’s technical and competitive skills are absolutely top notch” commented Piaggio Group’s Chairman and CEO, Roberto Colaninno. He also added that “Growth in Superbike has been exemplary in this direction from our rookie year in 2009 to the five world titles we’ve won so far with the RSV4”.
Fausto Gresini, owner and manager of the Gresini Racing said, “I am very glad that Aprilia identified Gresini Racing as the ideal partner to enter the MotoGP World Championship. I would like to thank the Piaggio Group for giving me a fantastic opportunity, that is working closely with such a glorious manufacturer; an Italian brand that has become synonymous with a passion for racing, reaching amazing results worldwide.”
“The four-year agreement between Gresini Racing and Aprilia opens a new chapter in our history: in this moment I feel a great responsibility, but the motivation to succeed in this exciting, all Italian challenge is even bigger. The Grand Prix world is part of the Aprilia brand and to represent it in the premier class, the MotoGP World Championship, is a source of great pride for all of us. An incredible reward for the work done in all these years by Gresini Racing.” he further added.
Aprilia didn't clarify as to what machine they will use for racing in the 2015 MotoGP series, but we believe that the bike will be RSV4 based machine. But for 2016, they can use a new bike altogether. RSV4 is Aprilia's flagship sports bike model. We hope that Aprilia will replicate its success from 125 and 250 cc category and Gressini will help them attain the status in MotoGP.
