The latest product to come from JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) is an armored variant of the standard wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography. It meets VR8 requirements, so it will be able to withstand 7.62 mm high velocity, armor-piercing incendiary bullets as well 15 kg TNT blasts. It also ensures defense up against DM51 grenade explosions not only from under the floor, but also from above the roof.
How is this possible you ask? SVO’s engineers have fitted the luxury SUV with a 6-piece armored passenger cell which is made from what they call “super-high-strength” steel. Moreover, there’s multi-laminated armor privacy glass that has replaced the standard windows and offers bullet protection while maintaining great visibility for all of those inside the cabin.
Power comes from the familiar 3.0-liter V6 supercharged gasoline engine delivering 340 bhp to a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox which had to be reworked for this armored model. It stops efficiently thanks to 380 mm discs at the front and 365 mm discs in the back - all of which are ventilated and benefit from high-density pads.
The Range Rover Sentinel comes with 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped around in run-flat, heavy-duty tires and according to SVO the vehicle has a maximum payload capacity of 650 kg. It also has revised Ride Stability Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems along with an upgraded suspension which has to handle a lot more weight.
The list of changes doesn’t end here as the Sentinel had to be equipped with an auxiliary backup battery as well as a split charging system and an anti-tamper exhaust while a self-sealing fuel tank was added as well. More importantly, there is an emergency escape system behind the individual rear seats which is used only in a case of emergency when the main doors are blocked either by an attack or an accident.
Land Rover mentions the Range Rover Sentinel by SVO will be available on order this month in EU countries, as well as Africa, the Middle East and South America. They mention a guide price of just under €400,000 (29.7 million INR) and a three-year warranty (or 80,500 km).
