There’s hardly any doubt that the upcoming Audi A8 flagship sedan from the German manufacturer will be a technological and luxurious tech fest. While many are arguing that the new A8 is nothing different as it resembles many of the Audi cars, it is indeed an all-new vehicle, although some styling elements are the trademark Audi design.
But Audi promises the fourth generation of its flagship sedan ushers in a new design language for the brand and ahead of embargo dropping on the reviews, the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer has published a couple of new videos shot in Valencia, Spain with its range topper in both the standard and long wheelbase flavors.
The new Audi sedan has a stand-out rear end with the OLED strip running throughout the width of the car, giving it a distinctive look. But the Audi’s signature hexagonal front grille left us wanting for more, as it is more of an evolutionary design. The whole design of the new Audi is imposing, especially the 21-inch wheels.
Other major changes to the exterior include an enlarged body that includes a stretched wheelbase for the superior legroom on the back seats. The body of the new A8 is in fact made of 58 percent from aluminum, while the rest of it makes use of high-strength steel, magnesium, and even carbon fiber. Such material use is usually seen only in supercars.
But the real fun starts inside the cabin of the A8, which is more of revolutionary rather than evolutionary, as the exteriors. The dashboard has been rethought from the ground up and the lowered touchscreen on the central console will instantly catch your eyes. The screen replaces the conventional buttons and knobs of the climate control system and other functions.
The screen measures 8.6 inches and isn’t your usual infotainment screen. It sits below the infotainment’s bigger 10.1-inch screen. The instrument cluster is also fully digital and in fact, is the company’s highly touted second generation of Audi Virtual Cockpit, making the new Audi A8 the first car to get this system.
The company has also said that the four-ring logoed A8 is smart enough to meet level 3 autonomous driving requirements, but it can’t unlock the full tech at the moment due to legal concerns. However, you can now park the car using this autonomous capabilities. Also, the car is massively rich in technology and safety with many first in class features.
Some of these features include automatic air suspension that lowers and raises the car sensing the potholes, an active safety system that raises the car in case of side impact and many such advanced features that are yet to make way in any other car in the world right now.
The new Audi A8 will only be launched with a V6 engine, while the bigger V8 gasoline and diesel mills to arrive in 2018 when the range will be topped by the mighty W12. Audi will also add a sporty S8 model followed by a possible hybridized S8 E-Tron with even more punch to serve as a direct successor of the S8 Plus.
The highly luxurious Audi A8 will give stiff competition to the latest BMW 7 Series, and the recently facelifted Mercedes S-Class, in the full size luxury sedan category.
