Audi has taken the lead in India to launch the first ever production car with laser headlights. Audi has launched the limited number R8 LMX in India at Rs 2.97 crore (ex-showroom). The 99 units limited edition is the most powerful R8 in the Audi lineup. Although, BMW has taken lead globally with the launch of BMW i8, to become the first manufacturer to launch laser headlights.
The limited edition R8 LMX, as said earlier, is the most powerful R8 ever in the Audi lineup, thanks to a massive 5.2 litre V10 engine, capable of generating 570 hp of maximum power and 540 Nm of maximum torque. These numbers are enough to take the car from standstill to 100 kmph in less than 3.4 seconds and achieve a top speed of 320 kmph. The power is sent via a 7-speed S-tronic gearbox, which comes equipped with a quattro all-wheel drive system.
Speaking of the design, not much is changed on the exterior, apart from the much talked about new laser high beam headlamps. Apart from that, Audi R8 gets a fixed rear spoiler and comes in an exclusive Ara Blue paint. The interiors get a heavy dose of carbon fibre treatment, Nappa leather, and Alcantara addition. The stitching and accents are in Ara Blue and Sepang Blue colours.
But what are these laser headlamps? The headlamps are touted as a next level lighting system which gets activated after 60 kmph speed, offering greater visibility than conventional units. The headlamps offer twice visibility in comparison to the all LED headlamps. The headlamps gets laser module, which contains four laser diodes and emits white light. The lights can detect oncoming traffic and adjust its light pattern to avoid excessive brightness.
