Of all the performance arms of the mainstream manufacturers, and especially the German big three, Audi's S-division might be the most underrated arm. While the enthusiasts swear by the M-division of BMW and Mercedes' AMG division, not many are aware of the Audi's S-range. But worry not, the latest Audi S8 could change the equation.
Yes, Audi has revealed the top-of-the-line S8 Plus Sedan today. The performance sedan is the spiced up version of the flagship A8 sedan and the new model has received a substantial update from Audi and Quattro GmbH. And with the launch, the S8 have become the most powerful car in the segment, leaving aside the Mercedes-Bnez S65, that has four extra cylinders and two more litres of displacement.
The beast is powered by a 4.0-litre TFSI V8 biturbo engine that now churns out 605 horsepower as opposed to earlier 520 horses. The torque has also been increased to 700 Nm, which can be extended to 750 Nm in the overboost mode. Add to it the lightweight body made completely out aluminium that weighs only 231kg, the large sport sedan delivers staggering performance.
The S8 Plus can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 3.8 seconds and has an electronically limited speed of 250 kmph, which can be increased to 305 kmph. The performance is the best among any of the eight-cylinder performance sports sedan leaving aside the Mercedes Benz S63 AMG. The V8s from Jaguar XJR and Maserati Quattroporte can't come close to the S8 Plus.
The Dynamic package that enables Audi S8 Plus to do 305 kmph comes standard in Germany. All the braking power to stop such a powerful machine comes from the Carbon-ceramic brakes nestled inside the set of 21-inch wheels. The S8 Plus comes with an exclusive matte silver paint and Audi has given visual upgrades both inside and out of the S8 Plus to differ it from the "lesser" versions.
"We have further sharpened our large sport sedan," says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development at AUDI AG. He adds, "The new Audi S8 plus has a substantial gain in power and defines the pinnacle of sporty performance in the segment. That is why 'plus' appears in its name."
And as you know, performance comes at a cost and the Audi will charge its buyers 145,200 euros to buy the S8 Plus, that will be launched in November. That's 28,000 more than the existing S8, making it the new top of the line model.
