Autonomous Car Kills Cyclist In USA

An autonomous driving Volvo XC90 SUV in Arizona in the USA has killed a cyclist marking the first death by any self-driving vehicle in the world. The car owns to the Uber Technologies was running in autonomous mode and there was an operator behind the steering wheel. The app-based cab service provider has been testing the self-driving cars in Arizona for quite some time and it is currently fully co-operating with the local police in the investigation.

Keeping the focus on future mobility solutions, Uber has been running its self-driving cars in cities like Phoenix, Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and in Toronto as well. The company has been running these tests since 2016 without any major incident until the latest one. Now, due to the incident, Uber Technologies has halted the test run of the autonomous vehicles in Arizona.

While the machine-learning and autonomous driving technology are creating a strong buzz in the mobility sector and various auto manufacturer and technology companies are working on this sector, the latest incident comes as a blow to the development process. According to the local police, the particular Volvo XC90 was running at a speed of 65 kmph during the accident. Meanwhile Uber has said that the software onboard the vehicle that was controlling the entire system is not its own.

This is not the first time autonomous driving technology or semi-autonomous driving tech has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Previous Tesla cars equipped with Autopilot, a semi-autonomous driving technology have been accused of behaving erratically. However, this was the first time when a death was occurred by a self-driving car.
