  • Bajaj Auto Ltd is introducing a new design of electric vehicles under its Urbanite Brand.

  • The Urbanite brand of EVs will be different from what we get in the market today.

Bajaj Auto Ltd is working on a range of ideas to make it exciting for electric vehicle lovers. They plan to introduce the Urbanite brand that will be in contrast to the general image of electric vehicles.

Eric Vas, President of the Bajaj Urbanite business unit, states that the designing of the electric vehicles depends on the customers’ response. Bajaj Auto aims to make the design enticing for the customer. He further noted that Bajaj Auto has a commitment to bring electric mobility in the industry. One of the vast challenges that lie ahead is in providing charging infrastructure to these electric vehicles.

NITI Aayog had proposed in June that all 2-wheelers under 150cc should run on electricity with effect from April 01. 2025. It is a tough challenge because the industry is now struggling to comply with the BSVI norms by April 01, 2020. The tangible shift from internal combustion engines to electric motors could take time.

The discussion between NITI Aayog and the industry leaders revealed that the OEMs should come up with a well-defined roadmap to provide electric mobility. Bajaj Auto is ready to announce the plans for the Urbanite sub-brand on October 16, this year.

The unveiling of the new brand will be done by Rajiv Bajaj, MD of Bajaj Auto and Amitabh Kant, NITI Aayog CEO along with Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari. The upcoming electric vehicles have a task on hand to make an impact on buyers. The price difference is also a significant concern.

Eric Vas commented that combustion engines will be around for some time. However, battery prices could fall anytime. Hence, EVs have a fantastic future ahead.

Vas also believes that awareness is a critical virtue that many potential buyers have. Hence, he said that the market size for EVs in India can surprise everyone.

EV manufacturers can tap into a specific segment of the market that uses non-motorised vehicles like bicycles. However, for that to happen, the pricing of the EVs have to come down drastically.
