Without any doubt, Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen or G-Class as it is popularly known as, is one monster of an SUV. The German automajor has just revealed the facelifted G-Class family with major improvement in the mechanicals of the car. The facelifted G-Class will be offered in a G500 and G350d versions, G63 AMG and G65 AMG versions and a special 463 AMG edition.
To start with, the biggest change has come in the form of the introduction of a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine in the G500 version. This is the same engine that powers the Merc's G500 4x4² concept. The engine is capable of producing 422PS of maximum power and 610 Nm of maximum torque between 2250 to 4750 rpm. That's enough to push the car from 0-100kmph in 5.9 seconds, a record for any SUV.
On the other hand, the G350d variant is powered by the same engine as the outgoing model but with tweaked performance. The power surge has raised the output from 211PS to 245PS of maximum power, while the torque has shot up from 540 Nm to 600 Nm. The result is an improved run from 0-100 kmph in 8.9 seconds.
Like mentioned above, the changes made to the next-generation G-Class has been mostly mechanical and not on the design front. Yet, facelifted G350d and G500 become more visually appealing thanks to the restyled bumpers both in front and back. The SUVs are also benefited with AMG flared wheel arches in the color of the vehicle as standard. The G350d also gets 18-inch five-spoke light-alloy wheels as standard.
The third model in the G-Class lineup is the G63 AMG, which has also received a major power boost. The G63 AMG now delivers 571PS of peak power, a healthy 27PS jump over the outgoing model and a maximum torque of 760 Nm. The elder sibling G65 AMG, on the other hand, produces a peak power of 630PS instead of 612PS and a peak torque of 1000 Nm.
The new addition to the lot is the AMG EDITION 463 special model, that will give the G-Class “an impressive sporty look”. The top-of-the-line model will get the stainless steel underguard installed by the manufacturer along with the AMG sport stripes on the sides. The 463 AMG will also get a protective-strip insert with a black aluminum look and the 21inch forged wheels.
Inside the cabin, the 463 AG Special Edition will come loaded with a two-tone instrument panel. Also, the seats are done in two-tone leather with side bolsters wrapped in carbon-look leather and contrasting top stitching seat. The door center panels are done in a diamond design with carbon-fiber trim and door pulls in nappa leather.
