BMW India has finally launched the i8 Hybrid Sportscar at a staggering price of Rs. 2.29 Crore (Ex-Showroom) in the country. The launch of i8 electric Hybrid introduces the 'i' branding of BMW in India. Showcased first at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, the i8 has managed to gather a lot of appreciation and anticipation from the auto enthusiasts before the launch itself. Sachin Tendulkar and Phillip von Sahr (President, BMW India) launched the hybrid sports car in Mumbai.
The Sportscar from BMW has been designed in the utmost futuristic way and extensively uses carbon fibre and aluminium in the design. The use of these two materials limits the weight of the car to 1485kg. The car has a seating arrangement of 2+2 and it is only the second car after Audi R8 LMX to flaunt laser-beam headlamps in India. The BMW i8 Hybrid, as the name implies, draws power from two sources - a 1.5L 3-cylinder petrol motor and an electric motor. The combined power output from both the sources goes upto 360bhp and 570Nm of maximum torque. That's enough for the car to do a 0-100kmph in a mere 4.4 seconds, while achieving an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph.
The transmission duties are performed by a 8-speed automatic transmission that send power to all the four wheels. While the electric motor, with a 2-speed gearbox, transfers the power to the front wheels, a 6-speed gearbox connected to the 1.5L petrol motor drives the rear wheels. Brought via the CBU route, the Hybrid car will be sold in extremely limited numbers in the country. Surprisingly, the company has also showcased the i3 hybrid at i8's launch, indicating it might be the next product from 'i' brand in the country.
