BMW India would launch the i8 hybrid sportcar on February 18, 2015 in the country. Being unveiled at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo around a year back, it would be sold in limited numbers in India and via CBU route. It is expected to be launched at a price tag in excess of Rs. 2 Crore. Also, the BMW i8 electric hybrid is the only the second car after the Audi R8 LMX to flaunt laser-beam headlamps in India.
Being a 2+2 seater vehicle, it weighs extremely low due to the extensive use of carbon fibre and aluminium in its construction. Precisely, it has a kerb weight of 1485 kgs, which helps it do a 0-100kmph in mere 4.4 seconds, while achieving an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. The supercar draws power from the combination of a 1.5L, 3-cylinder petrol motor and an electric motor, while they jointly generate a maximum power of 360bhp and 570Nm. There is also an additional electric motor, relatively smaller in size, to start the car but it also fill in torque gaps of the the engine to ensure flawless and effortless performance.
The engine of BMW i8 is linked to a 8-speed automatic transmission, while power being evenly disbursed to all the four wheels of the supercar. The electric motor, with a 2-speed gearbox, transfers the power to the front wheels of the i8 hybrid, while the rear wheels get driven by a 6-speed gearbox, connected to the 1.5L petrol motor. The launch of i8 electric hyrbid would also introduce the 'i' branding of BMW in India. After the launch of i8, it is also expected that the German luxury automaker might launch the smaller i3 hybrid in the country as well. The i8 hyrbid can be spotted at certain company dealerships in Mumbai and Delhi.
