BMW India will launch the i8 Hybrid Sportscar tomorrow on 18th February, 2015 in the country. BMW i8 was first showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo and since then it is among the highly anticipated vehicles in India. The Hybrid car will be sold in limited numbers and will be priced upwards of Rs 2 crore, since it will come via the CBU route.
The design of the i8 is extremely futuristic and the extensive use of carbon fibre and aluminium ensures extremely light weight body (1485kg to be precise). The car is essentially a 2+2 seater vehicle, and comes with the futuristic set of laser-beam headlamps. These headlmaps on the BMW i8 electric hybrid were first inroduced in the Audi R8 LMX which was launched recently in India.
As for the engine, the BMW Hybrid electric comes equipped with a 1.5L, 3-cylinder petrol motor and an electric motor. The power derived from both the sources cross 360bhp and 570Nm of maximum torque. That's enough for the car to do 0-100kmph in a mere 4.4 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph. The power is sent to all the four-wheels via a 8-speed automatic transmission.
While the electric motor, with a 2-speed gearbox, transfers the power to the front wheels of the i8 hybrid, the rear wheels get driven by a 6-speed gearbox, connected to the 1.5L petrol motor. The launch of i8 electric Hybrid would also introduce the 'i' branding of BMW in India.
