BMW, the German luxury automaker, would unveil a special edition of the i8 electric hybrid supercar at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. Being christened as BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition, it would be built in Leipzig from July and would be available for a limited period. The i8 Protonic Red Edition would come with several cosmetic updates at the outside, while mechanically being unchanged. Just so you know, BMW i8 was voted World Green Car of the Year and Green Luxury Car.
“The success of the BMW i8 speaks for itself,” said Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “It is already the world’s most successful hybrid sports car and has comfortably exceeded our own expectations. I can think of no better illustration of the relevance of our young BMW i brand.” BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition would feature a Protonic Red paint finish with accents in Frozen Grey metallic. The colour scheme would be complemented by BMW W-spoke 470 light-alloy wheels painted in Orbit Grey metallic with hubs painted in Aluminium matt and mixed-size tyres. Inside the cabin, there would be red double-stitching and applications in high-grade carbon fibre and ceramic.
Under the bonnet, the i8 Protonic Red Edition would have the same 1.5L, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine and an electric drive system. The supercar would have a maximum power output of 362bhp, while delivering an astonishing fuel economy of around 40kmpl. BMW i8 was launched in India in February 2015 by ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who also happens to be BMW's brand ambassador. The supercar had a sticker price of Rs. 2.29 Crores (Ex. Showroom) and only 8 units were allocated to India. The pricing of the i8 Protonic Red Edition is not disclosed yet and it is also not known that whether it would be heading to India or not.
