The German automobile manufacturer BMW revealed the concept of BMW i8 during the Frankfurt Motor Show 2013. The Frankfurt Motor Show brings out many concepts and new models from various manufacturers, and the BMW i8 is now added to the growing list. This will be an addition to the BMW product line which consists of the X5 e Drive, X5 and 4 Series Coupe. The i8 was one of the most anticipated cars that was unveiled today.
It is a full hybrid car that is powered by turbocharged 1.5 liter BMW turbo twin power petrol engine, with built-in intelligent management system. The engine is expected to produce a power of 231 HP and maximum Torque of 320 NM, the electric motor produces a power of 131 HP and 250 NM of Torque through the use of 2 speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. The total power generated amounts to 94 miles per gallon, which makes it efficient and fast at the same time. The charging for electric power can be done by using a 110 volt outlet within 4 hours. The company aims to trim down the charging time to 1.5 hours in the future.
The exterior of the car is fabricated with carbon fiber reinforced plastic which makes it extremely light. It is expected to have an acceleration of 0-100 Kmph in 4.5 seconds. The mileage of the car when travelling under electric power is estimated to be 8.2 Km per liter in city and 11.9 Km per liter of highways. It is a 4 seated car that uses aluminum drive module and a pair of drive module controllers. It is designed with active sport, comfort and Eco Pro settings. The derive button in the driver space will put the car in EV mode when pressed. The price of the car is expected to be Rs. 1,50,00,000 in Delhi. This will be the second most expensive car in the BMW range after the BMW 760Li.
