BMW launches 4-Series Convertible in Singapore

Snapshot: BMW Asia launches BMW 4-Series convertible in Singapore, Expected to reach Indian shores before the end of this year

BMW Asia took the wrap off from the new 4-Series Convertible in Singapore today. For those who are unaware, the company has derived the 4-Series to discriminate convertible and Gran Coupé versions of the 3-Series that used to be named as 3-Series Convertible and 3-Series Gran Coupé earlier.

The BMW 4 Series Convertible offers everyday driving qualities and a dynamic design, with the top up or down. The hardtop of the BMW 4 Series Convertible features a number of design improvements that reduce noise levels for a much quieter interior ambience. The sound-absorbing headliner also reduces wind noise by up to 2 dB in comparison to the predecessor model. The dynamic coupé can be turned into a convertible within 20 seconds by switching off and on the roof just with push of a button. The top can also be lowered while the vehicle travels at speeds of up to 18 kmph.

The front stance of the 4-series is almost similar to its saloon version and differences are limited to altered bumper design and a slightly enlarged iconic kidney-grille. However, increased dimensions (length by 26 mm, wheelbase by 50 mm to the outgoing 3-Series convertible), elongated boot and forwardly repositioned c-pillar and tweaks to rear styling add a character to it.

The 4-Series is even more dynamic as engineers at BMW have brought down the center of gravity by making it 8 mm closer while the front and rear track are increased by 45 mm and 81 mm respectively. Furthermore, the rigidity of the chassis has been enhanced by 40 percent and even after increased dimensions, the 4-Series weighs 20 kilograms less than its outgoing version, thanks to the ultra-high-strength multi-phase steels and tailored blanks construction. The interior also follows the current 3-Series arrangement and layout of elements but have been made more plush with use of new leather upholstery.

BMW has introduced the 4-Series convertible in two trim levels, 435i - 3.0-litre inline-6 and 428i -2.0-litre four cylinder turbocharged unit. The 435i gets the power of 306 BHP and 400 Nm torque from its six-pot unit to do the 0-100 kmph sprint in just 5.5 seconds. The less powerful 428i variant receives 245 BHP and 306 Nm of torque and can achieve the 0-100 kmph mark in 6.4 seconds. Both power units are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that can also shift gear manually via paddle shifters.

The BMW 4 Series Convertible is available for viewing at Performance Motors’ showroom in Singapore. If we talk about the Indian market, the German automaker is tight-lipped on the 4-Series' launch plan but we expect it to reach our shores before the end of 2014 via CBU route.
