BMW has announced the availability of a retrofit Cornering ABS available only for its HP4 motorcycle which is a highly capable S1000RR. A press release from the German auto maker says that the 'ABS Pro' will be offered 'initially' only for the HP4 models at a price of €380 (Rs 31,000 approx.). Also the mention of the word 'initially' gives us a hint that the Cornering ABS might be available for other models sometime in the future. The primary reason behind developing this system is to avoid hazards that may arise due to the unforeseen problems that the rider might encounter on a mid-corner while leaning. This lean angle sensitive system will prevent the wheels from locking in case of hard braking on the turns which will avoid the tyres getting grip in the middle of the corner and throwing the rider over the motorcycle.

The press release further said, "The function ABS Pro represents a consistent refinement of the Race ABS in that it now enables ABS-supported braking when cornering. ABS Pro is offered as a retrofittable option which can be acquired through BMW Motorrad dealerships and is initially reserved exclusively for the top supersports model in the BMW Motorrad product range, the HP4. The function was deliberately conceived for use on public roads, where unexpected dangers can always potentially lie in waiting. While the Race ABS in the HP4 already provides a very high degree of safety when braking in a straight line, ABS Pro now goes a step further to offer increased safety when braking on bends as well. Here, ABS Pro prevents the wheels from locking even when the brakes are applied quickly; this reduces abrupt changes in steering force on shock-braking manoeuvres and stops the motorcycle from rearing up unintentionally."
