BMW is putting the finishing touches on a hotter version of the India-bound X4 crossover coupe which is set to be sold with the “M40i” moniker. These are the first official images of the model which should receive its proper launch in the coming days, ahead of a sales launch likely set for the end of this year in Europe. It will be quite difficult to distinguish this version from the regular X4 fitted with the M Sport Package, but there are some changes such as the unique 19-inch rims, new trim accents and revised mirror caps.
It also has glossy black dual exhaust tips while inside the cabin it has gained a redesigned steering wheel along with special door sills featuring the “X4 M40i” lettering to denote this is the crown jewel of the X4 range, but this could be temporarily as we won’t be surprised if the Bavarians have plans for a fully-fledged X4 M.
The main idea behind this higher specification X4 is to offer more performance thanks to a six-cylinder, 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which is said to provide a strong 360 bhp output. This should enable the M40i version to complete the 0-100 kmph run in as little as 4.9 seconds, so it will be 0.6 seconds quicker than the 35i variant. As you would expect from a BMW model, top speed will likely be electronically capped at 250 kmph.
An official launch is expected to occur later this week at a price tag significantly higher compared to the xDrive35i which at home in Germany begins at €58,800, so this will likely be around €65,000. A hypothetical X4 M will probably hit the €70,000 mark, but BMW has not confirmed just yet an M variant. It actually might happened taking into account they already have the X5 M and X6 M while BMW M chief Frank van Meel said earlier this year there’s a viable business case for similar versions of the X3 and X4.
