The BS-Vl emission regulations are mandatory for all vehicles from April 1, 2020, and manufacturers are launching products now onward itself so that they don’t miss the deadline. The Piaggio group in India has followed suit with the Aprilia and Vespa ranges of scooters being updated to BS Vl spec.
They all get fuel injection to meet the updated emission norms, and the price increase is a staggering Rs 17,000 to Rs 19,500, depending on the variant - that’s approximately a 24 percent price increase.
The Aprilia range gets a new range-topper with a 160 cc engine. This motor generates 11 bhp, thus preserving the peak power figure and thus the performance of the current crop of SR 150s. There is no official word on these changes, but a leaked document states that the 125 cc engine now generates 9.8 bhp and 9.6 Nm. That is an increase of 0.3 bhp and a decrease of 0.3 Nm.
The 150 cc engine will generate 10.3 bhp and 10.6 Nm. The changes here are an increase of 0.4 bhp and a decrease of 0.3 Nm. These changes are applicable to the Vespa range as well, as they share engines.
